Letter from the Editor
As an American with a well-worn passport, I’m very glad that English has been adopted as a lingua franca in many places around the globe. It sure beats fumbling around in a phrasebook trying to ask a stranger if the train about to leave the station will take you to your destination. At the same time, I would never want English to replace other languages. More ways of expressing ourselves means more diversity of thought, and a more vibrant world for all of us. But that presents a challenge for designers: How do you include multiple languages in a piece of work, giving them equal emphasis while still producing an attractive and effective design?
As a multilingual designer based in Canada, Izzy Poirier is very familiar with this challenge. In this month’s feature article, she shares insights and techniques from her network of colleagues who do this sort of thing tous les jours.
Next up, Conrad Chavez delivers a comprehensive rundown of everything new in Creative Cloud 2024—including a few things that don’t involve AI, believe it or not.
Then, grab a shovel and get ready to dig deep— and I mean deep—into the buried typographic treasures of the Glyphs panel with Nigel French.
With tight deadlines and even tighter budgets, we all love to make use of quick, free content. But Susan Neuhaus explains why you should be a bit cautious when grabbing images that are tagged with a Creative Commons license.
Our Resource of the Month is a biggie: a brand-spanking-new SuperGuide devoted to the topic of Data Merge. Whether you’re experienced or a newbie, I think you’ll find valuable techniques in it that’ll help you become a Master of the Merge.
In closing, this month’s set of articles from CreativePro.com includes everything you need to know about a major change in Adobe Fonts, how to preserve (okay, technically, restore) italics for things like book titles in InDesign indexes, and a fun one by Steve Caplin on how to animate 3D models in After Effects.
Enjoy!
