David BlatnerKeymasterLoic: I think it was because the image service URL you used looked like a png, but it was actually an html/php file that pointed to a png. Tricky! I fixed the urls for you. :-)
For readers: Loic’s idea is that you just insert a HUGE black rectangle character (a glyph that looks like a black rectangle) in a text frame and then change the color of that whole paragraph (including the based on the first character. The rectangle is so big that it fills the whole page, I guess. Interesting!
David BlatnerKeymasterAre you creating the cards with Data Merge? One idea would be to put the variable or the color on the same paragraph as the name. So it would come in as something like “Male:Steven Himpe”. And set up the template so that it comes in with a paragraph style that has a GREP style in it… and the GREP style could make the word “Male:” disappear (apply a character style that makes that text 0.01 pt large and a color of None) and then make the first word after “Male:” the color you want (again, with a character style).
David BlatnerKeymasterYou might be able to use the the grep codes in this article, along with positive lookahead and positive lookbehind to do it:
https://creativepro.com/search-for-foreign-language-characters-in-text.phpLike, “find all spaces that have a Chinese character before and a Chinese character after”
David BlatnerKeymasterInDesign 2? PowerPC? Wow! That’s old school, man! :-)
The good news is that PDF/X-1a is mostly just a preset of a bunch of regular PDF settings. If you choose “Acrobat 4” compatibility in the PDF export dialog box, you’re most of the way there.
David BlatnerKeymasterThis might help?

David BlatnerKeymasterBest option, when things go wonky like that, is to rebuild your preferences:

try that and let us know if it helped!
David BlatnerKeymasterHow frustrating! Have you tried rebuilding your preferences yet?

David BlatnerKeymasterI don’t entirely understand what you’re asking about settings. Particular examples may be helpful.
In the meantime, this article might help?
https://creativepro.com/visual-guide-indesign-preferences.phpAs for the master page: Yes, I think you are right with (a).
As for (b) I think it’s not that some of the settings are applied… rather, it’s that [none] just leaves certain things alone (it doesn’t affect them).
David BlatnerKeymasterAh! That is helpful. You don’t want a single word stranded. I don’t think there is any way to deal with that in InDesign. You could make a grep style that keeps all the first words of a sentence with the second word, for example, but it would apply to every sentence — not just the ones at the bottom of a column. InDesign’s GREP feature can’t “see” where it is in a column or on a line.
David BlatnerKeymasterWow, that’s pretty odd.
First, I would suggest rebuilding your preferences.

Also, check to see if you have any third-party plug-ins installed. As for seeing what’s in the box, maybe select with Selection tool and choose Edit > Edit in Story Editor. Does that help?
David BlatnerKeymasterI don’t use InCopy for anything. I know I should like it, and use it — my business partner, Anne-Marie, is one of the top InCopy experts in the world! But I’m happy with Word. Even 90% of the articles in InDesign Magazine start out as Word files.
Word is great for writing and editing text, but I would almost never use it to actually lay out a page! That’s what InDesign is for.
