David BlatnerKeymasterPants? Don't know that phrase.

DavidM: One of the best ways to get images out of Word is to export the Word document as HTML. That should give you a folder full of the images. Then import those manually into InDesign, using Place or drag-and-drop.
David BlatnerKeymasterInteresting, Adi! It's a good point that features sometimes can affect the outcome, even though they appear to be grayed out. To change them, you have to get them “not gray”, then change them, then (sometimes) get them gray again. Crazy.
David BlatnerKeymasterOff topic for a moment… on the question of “Arabic” vs. “Latin” numbers.
Here in the West, we usually call the digits 1, 2, 3, and so on (normal, western numbers) “Arabic numerals.” So I asked someone who knows some Arabic what they call the numbers ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?. (I have no idea if those numerals will show up in this forum!) The answer was: The numbers used in Arabic-language publications (and on license plates and so on) are not Arabic, but actually Farsi. The numbers that we use in the West are Arabic, but Arabs chose some time ago not to use them because they were Western…?
Wikipedia indicates that these numerals are “Eastern Arabic numerals” and in another post notes that these numerals are similar but not identical to Persian.
Hm. I think the only solution is to switch back to roman numerals for everything…
David BlatnerKeymasterI see, so the data is just coming in wrong! In general, the procedure should be: Make the template and save it, import the data, turn on Preview to make sure it's more or less working, then import the data, then proof it. If it looks wrong, then choose File > Revert to back to the clean template. Go fix the CSV (or tab-delimited .txt) data and then import it again.
One other possible solution for “fixing empty records” is to set up your grid as a bunch of anchored objects. This doesn't work well with datamerge, but you could probably do it with InData: https://creativepro.com/auto-reflowing-images-in-a-grid.php

David BlatnerKeymasterAre you using the Data Merge feature in InDesign to create these documents? Or some other plug-in, such as InData or EasyCatalog? There is no doubt that you want to have “clean” data before you import!
David BlatnerKeymasterThanks, Marcus! Yeah, as I like to say, “we're slow but we get there sooner or later.”

David BlatnerKeymasterHank/Eugene: I have a feeling that I will often reply to posts on this forum with, “yes, but you can do that with the Blatner Tools plug-ins.” In fact, you can do this (if you have Blatner Tools installed):
- Make a Bold character style (the “Create Basic Character Styles” feature in the character styles panel menu will do this for you)
- Select it in the panel, right-click on it, and choose Add to Blatner Tools menu. Choose a slot (1-10) for it.
- In the current free beta, you have to then go to the Keyboard Shortcuts panel to assign a shortcut; we're redesigning this so that the shortcut can be applied much easier, in step 2. But either way, apply Command-Shift-B (or whatever) to the Character Style 1 (or whatever slot you used) feature.
Now, when you press that shortcut, it will apply the character style instead of the local formatting!
(This was one of the first features in Blatner Tools that I specced… the ability to apply KBSC to styles is crucial for an efficient workflow!)
David BlatnerKeymasterAre you seeing the math captcha (3+1 or whatever) when you post a topic or a reply? That was supposed to be removed during beta testing. I don't see it anymore. Does anyone else see it?
(There's no reason for you to prove you're human with the captcha if you're already logged in as a user.)
David BlatnerKeymasterYes, it has always been “first/oldest” topics first in the list. But to tell you the truth, I'm not sure why… I have just reversed the order. Is it “newest first” for you now? Is that better for people?
David BlatnerKeymasterI'm not sure of the details yet. It is certainly mysterious and frustrating. Rufus is an excellent resource (and person!)

David BlatnerKeymasterGreat idea, Bob! I prefer the LCD screens, though. (I'm looking into getting a projection dlp or lcd for home… a friend says he'll loan me one he's not using.)
Anyway, here's the thing: In theory no one but contributors can see this forum. But I'm not sure it works yet. We should make sure that's true before divulging any real indesign secrets (like how to get that character rotation thing I was dreaming about). ;)
This forum thing is all a new experience.
Hey, BTW, sorry if you're having trouble getting to the site. We're having massive, massive server problems. Totally unclear what is going on. The VPS gets overwhelmed and kills itself. Our ISP is tearing his hair out.
