David BlatnerKeymasterWe'll see if we can get someone from dtp tools over here to look at this. But in general, specific plug-in support questions should go to the plug-in developer. For example, check out dtponline.com
David BlatnerKeymasterI always found that it was particularly helpful to do a Save As from PageMaker before opening the file in InDesign… just to clean out gunk that might have accumulated. But remember that ID has very different type controls than PageMaker (especially things like “tracking/range kerning”) so some changes are inevitable.
David BlatnerKeymasterOf course (you know I can't help but include this… sorry!) this is a great opportunity to buy copies of the InDesignSecrets Keyboard Shortcut poster for the whole department!
(The thing that gets me when I move between mac and windows is the reversal of the Ctrl and Command keys; I need to look at the keyboard to figure out where to put my thumb. Gr.)
David BlatnerKeymasterYour printer is probably just being “old fashioned.” That's a polite way of saying, he or she hasn't updated their brain since the 20th century. TrueType fonts are almost always fine, unless their RIP is from the mid 90s or something (in which case, you probably want a different printer anyway).
Of course, another option is to flatten the file while outlining the type as written about in this post.

David BlatnerKeymasterForgot to mention, if you have additional comments on Blatner Tools, you can also leave them here on the DTP Tools forums!

David BlatnerKeymasterI'm not sure what aspects of Smart Styles you're referring to… there are so many! Are you interested only in sorting?
SmartStyles is very good. But ID has basic table and cell styles built in. Or, if you're still using CS2, you could use the Teacup Software plug-ins.
Also, if you want info on calculating total in tables, check out this post.

David BlatnerKeymasterThere's some info on that here:

Random note for future: One of the features in Blatner Tools (https://dtptools.com/bt) is called “Remember” and it keeps track of your preferences and settings in case you have to rebuild them later or they get reset. It's nifty!

David BlatnerKeymasterInteresting, Adi! It's a good point that features sometimes can affect the outcome, even though they appear to be grayed out. To change them, you have to get them “not gray”, then change them, then (sometimes) get them gray again. Crazy.
David BlatnerKeymasterOff topic for a moment… on the question of “Arabic” vs. “Latin” numbers.
Here in the West, we usually call the digits 1, 2, 3, and so on (normal, western numbers) “Arabic numerals.” So I asked someone who knows some Arabic what they call the numbers ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?. (I have no idea if those numerals will show up in this forum!) The answer was: The numbers used in Arabic-language publications (and on license plates and so on) are not Arabic, but actually Farsi. The numbers that we use in the West are Arabic, but Arabs chose some time ago not to use them because they were Western…?
Wikipedia indicates that these numerals are “Eastern Arabic numerals” and in another post notes that these numerals are similar but not identical to Persian.
Hm. I think the only solution is to switch back to roman numerals for everything…
David BlatnerKeymasterI see, so the data is just coming in wrong! In general, the procedure should be: Make the template and save it, import the data, turn on Preview to make sure it's more or less working, then import the data, then proof it. If it looks wrong, then choose File > Revert to back to the clean template. Go fix the CSV (or tab-delimited .txt) data and then import it again.
One other possible solution for “fixing empty records” is to set up your grid as a bunch of anchored objects. This doesn't work well with datamerge, but you could probably do it with InData: https://creativepro.com/auto-reflowing-images-in-a-grid.php
