SkyFonts and Google Fonts Team Up

Press Release

WOBURN, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Monotype Imaging Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: TYPE), a leading provider of typefaces, technology and expertise for creative applications and consumer devices, has teamed up with Google to offer versions of Google Web fonts designed for print. Users of Google Fonts can now work with free, desktop versions of Google Web fonts accessed through Monotype’s patent-pending SkyFonts™ technology, which enables cloud-based access to OpenType® fonts.

“SkyFonts will allow Google Fonts users to access desktop versions of their Web fonts quickly and easily,” said Darren Glenister, SkyFonts product manager at Monotype. “It’s all about improving typographic freedom and flexibility, and giving Web designers control over the fonts they want to use.”

SkyFonts is a desktop client utility that operates in the background of Macintosh® or Windows® machines, activating and deactivating OpenType fonts that are available for all applications on the user’s system. Moving forward, as new Google font data is released, such as when characters are added to a font, or when other font enhancements or updates are made, SkyFonts delivers them to users automatically.

“SkyFonts brings improved convenience to Google Fonts users,” said Chris Roberts, vice president and general manager of Monotype’s e-commerce group. “SkyFonts represents our latest collaboration with Google to make Web fonts better and the Web more beautiful.”

Users of Google Fonts can visit Fonts.com/web-fonts/google to download SkyFonts and access desktop versions of the complete Google Fonts inventory. Like Google Fonts, the service is free.

Google Fonts users with Fonts.com Web Fonts subscriptions can also use SkyFonts to install and temporarily try typefaces before purchasing on Fonts.com.

Today, Monotype unveiled its most comprehensive font subscription plan ever: the Fonts.com Web Fonts Master subscription. Among its features, subscribers can activate an unlimited number of desktop fonts that are available through the SkyFonts service. Subscribers can choose from over 7,000 desktop fonts to use on up to five workstations. In addition, Fonts.com Web Fonts Professional plans have been enhanced to include five desktop fonts, also administered through SkyFonts. When a desktop font is activated through Fonts.com, the font remains active on the workstations for 30 days before it’s removed automatically. If a subscriber has a desktop font allowance, it’s replenished every 30 days.
