Graphic Designers: Are You Putting Your Best Face Forward?
As part of an ongoing commitment to helping graphic designers succeed beyond even their wildest imaginations, NewPage has developed Looking Marvelous as the newest addition to its The True You™ program. Two components — a brochure printed on Signature True® from NewPage, and a new section on the thetrueyou.com Web site — have been created to help designers further define themselves and learn just how effective they can be in putting their best face forward. Not to mention what they can do to provide their customers with a fresh new look.
To create the brochure and Web site, NewPage enlisted the expertise of several prominent professionals whose opinions and advice range from body language to head shots and “how to get it all just right.” The Looking Marvelous brochure — so personalized, it actually provides a mirror on which the reader can place his or her own image — is comprised of three valuable learning guides: it illustrates what a portrait says about the subject, how to look one’s best when being photographed through the use of makeup and lighting techniques, as well as information on various printing methods using 100 lb. Signature True gloss and dull text.
In the Looking Marvelous section of www.thetrueyou.com, designers are invited to submit a self portrait, along with an explanation of what they think their picture communicates. David B. Givens, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Nonverbal Studies, analyzes the photo and explains what their portrait really says about them. Often, the self-portrait falls short of what they really want to say: ”Hire me; I’m a professional who can get the job done.”
Additionally, our eyes, shoulders, hands, and lips play an important role in how we communicate. Dr. Givens offers insight on the psychology of body language and how creative professionals can use it to demonstrate self-confidence, and to understand the subliminal signals their clients may be sending from across the conference table.
As part of the “Looking Marvelous,” campaign, NewPage is also offering four comprehensive video tutorials featuring top professionals — put together especially for those graphic designers who want to learn even more about “putting their best face forward.” Here, they will be educated on the fine art of:
- Selecting the right photographer (award-winning portrait and illustration photographer Chris Callis),
- The importance of makeup (freelance makeup artist Renee Cergol-Amundson),
- Lighting techniques (Chris Callis), and
- Photo editing (photo editor and curator Alice Rose George).
At NewPage, The True You program represents the company’s commitment to creative professionals by offering interesting challenges, educational tools, mentoring and unusual incentives to graphic designers across the industry. Looking Marvelous gets designers started on creating a great face to put forward — for themselves and their clients.
Cheryl Heller of Heller Communications designed the site; Hunt and Gather built it.
