This Week in InDesign Articles, Number 41
Yet again, it’s time for another installment of This Week in InDesign! I’m pleasantly surprised that no one has given us grief for this really not coming out weekly, but rather whenever-it-works-out. Of course, virtually no one has ever mentioned that the Obscure InDesign Feature of the Week-eek-eek (in our podcast) is more bi-weekly. So there you go… we’re time challenged.
Whatever the case, here are some great links you should know about!
Videos
- Lynda.com continues to put out awesome movies of all sorts. For example, here’s a great title by Nigel French called? Designing a CD Cover Hands-On Workshop.
- Lynda.com also recently published Anne-Marie’s title InDesign CS5: Collaborative Workflows with InCopy CS5. Anyone who is interested in InCopy needs to watch it. In fact, if you’re not a subscriber, check out this 6-minute movie from Anne-Marie’s title on youtube!
- And, actually, if you’re not a subscriber, you can get a free 24-hour subscription here! If you like what you see, do us a favor and sign up. It’s pretty inexpensive, especially given what you get!
Great Articles
- Terry White is back at it again, with this fun article about using Buzzword docs and creating live captions in InDesign CS5.
- I liked this article about using negative space in book design. It’s not InDesign-specific, but it has good things to think about.
- Sometimes it’s nice to create a border around your page, especially if the page is smaller than your paper, and you want to print it out to show it to a client. Fortunately, Page Border is a free little script from indiscripts that can do this!
- You may have noticed that Amazon has released a beta plug-in for exporting Kindle documents from InDesign. Adam Jury points out that you can use it in either CS4 or CS5.
- I love messing with type, especially when someone says “don’t do that!” That’s why I like this article about how and when you can or even should skew text.
Interactive
- I was really pleased to see that the iPad app GoodReader has been updated in an important way: Now buttons in PDF files that you create in InDesign appear to work properly when you view them in GoodReader. Yay! (I don’t think I’ve seen it work in any other iPad apps yet, so this may be a first.)
- Cari Jansen continues her articles on making epubs and such with this one on controlling breaks in content.
Enjoy!

David, thanks so much for the link. I don’t mention InDesign in the blog post on negative space in book design, but I think you can tell from the screen shots that that’s where these books are all created.
Ah yet again well done David, the Page Border script is a great addition to my script collection, although I have requested a possible addition to this script by having it first run itself then to continue on and add the Cropmarks.applescipt.
Every job I do has to have a page border and crop marks added to it, page border so customers and see clearly the size of there job and crop marks for the printers.
Whenever it works out is fine with me, love reading these little articles of yours.
YES! Finally a new PageBorder script. I have used one in previous versions of InDesign, but was left stuck without after upgrading to CS5. Mind you, it looks like this script has a few more controls. Thanks Marc!
I note that Badia has just released an update to their free PageFrame plugin which now works with Indy CS5. It allows you to set where you want the frame (page or spread), the width and the style.
Nice alternative to PageBorder, although it doesn’t allow you to pick outside, centre or inside.
On the other hand, with this one you can set the colour from within the plug.
