David BlatnerKeymasterMike Rankin showed me a terrific tip for this kind of thing some years ago, which I show in this short video:

David BlatnerKeymasterMaybe “No Break” is applied to the text?
David BlatnerKeymasterThat is an interesting problem! I never thought of that… but yes, InDesign will not honor a Keep option if it means that the frame will be empty.
David BlatnerKeymasterIt sounds like maybe the document is set to have the wrong kind of quote marks? Check Preferences > Dictionary?

David BlatnerKeymasterHere is my take on the matter:
https://indesignsecrets.com/3-ways-to-fix-runts-in-your-text.php#comment-1967270It looks like Wikipedia and Herron Printing both reflect this, yes?
I respect Ilene’s work greatly, but I disagree with her on this. A window or orphan is never a short last-line.
David BlatnerKeymasterSorry about that, Sharon. It’s a never-ending battle with spammers. If you’re getting emails, then you must have subscribed to the forums:

David BlatnerKeymasterI think you might mean “CS4”? That’s going to be hard. Even if you do export IDML, there are dozens of features that, if you used them in CC, will get lost when you open in CS4. But I guess if the files are simple, it should work.
However, Markzware does have a product that lets you convert INDD files to IDML, called idmarkz… I haven’t tried it recently, but if you try it let us know how it goes!
David BlatnerKeymasterWhat version do you have? What version is at the office?
InDesign implemented an automatic “convert to IDML” a while back, which should kick in when trying to open a later version… but I don’t remember exactly what version it started with. Probably CC.
David BlatnerKeymasterUsually better to use File > Place to bring in those Word files. That will normally convert the quotes for you.

David BlatnerKeymasterThank you for posting a smaller file! :-)
This file is linked on Master Page B. I see that in the right column of the Links panel. If you open Master Page B in the Pages panel and delete everything, the link goes away.
If you want it in the document, but not linked, you’ll have to update or locate the link (it’s missing for me), and then select it in the Links panel and choose Unlink from the panel menu.
(Linking to spreadsheets is inside Preferences > File Handling)
David BlatnerKeymasterCurtis: you got close! It’s a “key object”. :-)
Yes, this is possible:

David BlatnerKeymasterPerhaps if you applied a character style to those words… that would “tag” them. Then a script could be written to just grab all the words that are tagged with that character style and write it to a text file.
It might help if you showed an example of how the text might appear in the story.
David BlatnerKeymasterDid you see Ariel’s script? (See the comments for possible edit for Indian system)
David BlatnerKeymasterSorry about that link, Lynette. I think it’s fixed now.
I think LayoutZone can also be used to export PDFs of selections: https://www.automatication.com/index.php?id=13
