David BlatnerKeymasterYou can select the name and title, press Cmd-7, then manually edit the “Topic” field to show:
Griffith, Kelly, MD
It takes longer because you have to edit each one.I just thought of another possible solution… Peter Kahrel has a script that converts character styled text into an index:
https://creativepro.com/files/kahrel/indesign/index_charstyles.html
That can also reverse names… but I don’t think it works with titles. I’m going to email him and ask if there’s any easy solution.May 31, 2022 at 10:43 am in reply to: Indexing Names with Professional Degrees (i.e. MD, PhD, MSc) #14366140
David BlatnerKeymasterI had totally forgotten about that keyboard shortcut! That’s such a good one. But no, I don’t think there’s any way to customize how it works. It’s pretty simple. Normally, if I had to index stuff like this, I’d use Command-7 to add it to the index manually. Takes longer, though.
I wonder if IndexMatic can do this? https://www.indiscripts.com/post/2018/03/indexmatic-quick-demo-last-name-first-name-queries
David BlatnerKeymasterCaspian: I’m glad you found a solution! Here’s a good link for future reference:
David BlatnerKeymasterNot sure if this will help, but here’s something I wrote up about figure numbering a while back:
David BlatnerKeymasterSo glad it worked out!
The discussion was fun. I ended up recording João Carlos’ solution as a video here:But I love that you tried different things and found a solution that worked best for you. Thank you for coming back and letting us know.
David BlatnerKeymasterWell, I don’t think it’s ever a good idea to send files to print without proofing and checking the work. Color shifts can happen… even if you send CMYK art!
Here is a list of articles you should definitely look through:Why You Should Import RGB Images Into InDesign and Convert to CMYK On Export
and this issue of the magazine:Here’s an article on why even converting to CMYK first is not safe:
David BlatnerKeymasterI don’t know of any way to lock them. I love John’s suggestion of using shortcuts.
Another option would be to use Quick Apply to open/close panels.
Another idea is to use the Control panel or the Properties panel for as much as possible. There are some things you can’t do there, but the list is getting smaller.
David BlatnerKeymasterBe sure to check the setting of your Preferences (see the preference for adding/changing layers references in the article about Illustrator above).
I am not a scripter myself, but you might find some help on the “InDesign Scripting” group on Facebook.
David BlatnerKeymasterThat is very strange. I just tested it and it works correctly for me.
I tried two different methods: setting the layers using the “show import options” dialog box (during Place) and using Object > Object Layer Options. I set layer visibility for the layered PSD file. Then I changed the PSD file and saved it. When I go back to InDesign and click Update, the layer visibility overrides that I set remain. The only thing I can think of is: Are you adding or deleting layers in the Photoshop file? That can confuse InDesign.
David BlatnerKeymasterAt the bottom of the Object Layer Options dialog box in InDesign, there is an option for “When Updating Link”… that should let you control what happens when the file updates: either keep the photoshop layers or keep the layer overrides.
More info here (the article is about illustrator, but it’s the same mechanism)
and this preference may also help:
A Fix for Problems With Layer Visibility Overrides In Placed Illustrator Files
and this script won’t help you directly, but it’s cool:
A Script to Change Layer Visibility of All Instances of a Placed File in InDesign
David BlatnerKeymasterYou should be able to put InDesign objects into a CC Library the same as an old InDesign library file. Oh… the trick is to add it as a GRAPHIC! That way you’re not adding it as text or styling, but as editable objects. (Well, they’re editable if you drag it back into InDesign.)
David BlatnerKeymasterHi Marc, sorry your post got caught in Moderation. I don’t know why. If it happens again, please email us at support@creativepro.com and we’ll try to fix it.

David BlatnerKeymasterThank you Dhafir! I believe this reply was held up in moderation by our system… I do not know why. If it happens again, please feel free to reach out to me directly and just tell me… I can click the approve button. :-)
Great to see you at CreativePro Week last week!
David BlatnerKeymasterHi Civi/Tzivi! The private forum is still there… do you not see it when you go to the main page?
https://creativepro.com/forums/
If not, it’s possible that your membership expired or something like that…When you place your cursor in a paragraph like that, do you see a + symbol next to the paragraph style name (in the paragraph styles panel)? It sounds like maybe there is some local/manual formatting override on the style.
I don’t have the ME version of InDesign, so I’m not sure how this should work, though.
