David BlatnerKeymasterData publishing is rarely “easy” but the Data Merge feature in InDesign can do wonders. I did a course on it a few years ago:
https://www.linkedin.com/learning/indesign-data-merge-and-database-publishing/data-merging-into-a-tableThere are lots of commercial plug-ins for InDesign that take data publishing to a higher level, including DataLinker, EasyCatalog, Cacidi LiveMerge and others. It all depends on how complex the job is.
David BlatnerKeymasterAh… gotcha… the paragraph style trick probably wouldn’t work as well. Sorry. Not sure what I was thinking there.
I think the best solution is to find someone to write a script that would simply apply a particular master page to those page numbers. When things get out of order, you would run the script and it would reset it.
What would you want on the other pages? Just “Parent Page A” for all of them?
David BlatnerKeymasterYeah, that’s a hard one. One way you might do it is to have some text on those pages, and assign a particular paragraph style to it. (Even if the text is on a non-printing layer.) Then you could use a script to look for pages with that paragraph style and apply the script to it. For example, this was written a while ago:
Or you could do it with a commercial script, probably even more efficiently, such as MasterMatic:
David BlatnerKeymasterWhen a Word import goes wrong, my first troubleshooting step is to do a Save As from Word, to clear out any gunk that might have built up. If it still doesn’t work, then I switch from .doc to .docx (or vice versa). I rarely use RTF, but that should work okay.

David BlatnerKeymasterI’m right there with you… I often don’t upgrade if you don’t have to! Often, I don’t upgrade my OS until I get a new computer (where it’s pre-installed). I wrote this article about not upgrading here:
As for which versions of InDesign work with OS Monterey (only on “r”… the two-R Monterrey is in Mexico!), I THINK that all those versions will run on it, but I’m actually not sure. Maybe someone else here can chime in.
David BlatnerKeymasterLots of various links to review on this topic… not all of these scripts and tools work anymore! (For example, World Tools hasn’t been updated in a long time)

David BlatnerKeymasterCaspian: When you’re rebuilding the preferences, are you actually seeing the dialog box show up that asks if you want to reset the prefs? Or do you not even see that? I want to be sure that prefs really are being reset. More info here:
David BlatnerKeymasterSorry your reply got stuck in moderation, Steve. I think our site is set up to moderate any post with 2 or more links in it, as it looks suspicious. :-)
David BlatnerKeymasterThank you for sharing, Theo! One tip: here on the forum, you should put programming code in HTML “pre” or “code” tags.
That way it appears like this:this is some code "and quotes and -- dashes are not changed"
