David BlatnerKeymasterWelcome to InDesignSecrets!
When I select an image, it does highlight in the Links panel. So might just be your system? Or document? Maybe rebuild your preferences? Hard to know!
David BlatnerKeymasterI’m not sure if this will work, but check out:

David BlatnerKeymasterWeird! I wonder if there is an extra space or character in the “Between Entry and Number” field (click “More Options” to see that info if you can’t see it)
David BlatnerKeymasterUsually the trick is to make the text frames buttons, too. The buttons do not have to do anything, but by making them buttons they become “overlays” and do not get covered up as easily.
There are some weird stacking problems, but I don’t think you have that problem. These are talked about here:

David BlatnerKeymasterRight now I would say using in5 and then putting behind a password protected site. But what was wrong with the result from in5? There are many different options (especially for fonts, etc.) in in5.

David BlatnerKeymasterWell if you cannot save your document, I am thinking there is a bigger problem… maybe you need to rebuild your preferences, or figure that out. And maybe if you figure that out, it will solve the weird page numbering problem, too. :-)

David BlatnerKeymasterThat is very strange. You’re not inserting the page numbers with data merge or something, right? They’re just regular automatic page numbers and text variables (for the “of 6” part)?
Does it help to save and close the document, and then reopen it? What about export the final document to IDML and open that?
David BlatnerKeymasterIf you export as PDF, it shouldn’t be a different size.
JPEG is harder. If it is an ad, you should use PDF, not jpeg.January 20, 2016 at 10:25 am in reply to: Create Directory with Headers from XL to Data Merge #80948
David BlatnerKeymasterMichael, have you looked at my Data Merge title at Lynda.com? I cover making a directory with that script and data merge.
However, doing the headers is not always easy. You may need to invest in a third-party tool such as InData from Em Software.

David BlatnerKeymasterSounds like something a dev could do relatively easiliy using APID https://www.rorohiko.com/wordpress/indesign-downloads/apid-toolassistant/
But it would have to be made custom.
David BlatnerKeymasterI’m not sure how best to handle that. Data Merge is definitely not designed to “go back and make modifications.” If you need to make changes, you need to reflow the whole document.
However, you might consider using a trick like this:
https://creativepro.com/data-merge-into-inline-anchored-objects-so-they-flow-in-a-story.php
David BlatnerKeymasterThere may be commercial third-party plug-ins that let you do this, but in order to do it with Data Merge (inside InDesign) you would have to “massage” the data spreadsheet first. Data Merge cannot change the position of the image.
So I would suggest creating four columns in the spreadsheet: top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right. Then, in Excel (or whatever spreadsheet you use) put the image path in the proper column, based on the FrameCode data.
