David BlatnerKeymasterMilton, we don’t have any way to insert images here in this forum, but you can add a link to images (in dropbox or imgur or any image sharing site).
David BlatnerKeymasterHm… yeah… I can’t think of an easy way to do that. Maybe someone else here can. Good luck!
David BlatnerKeymasterI don’t think the version is the problem. Remember, it only looks for two text frames that are overlapping on a page. If you draw a text frame and then duplicate it so that it’s mostly overlapping and run the script… nothing happens?
David BlatnerKeymasterI think I may have fixed the script, and it works for me. You can download it here.
It only works with text frames.
David BlatnerKeymasterI wonder if perhaps you or someone turned off the Transparent Background checkbox in Import Options at some point. That is sticky… so if you turn it off once, then suddenly all PDFs or AI files come in with a white background.
The solution is to use Import Options again and turn on the checkbox. For more info:

David BlatnerKeymasterThat’s a challenge, for sure. If you think the book will likely not be updated in the future, then perhaps your idea of using an old version of InDesign might work… just to get it done.
Personally, I’d likely try to push through and update the fonts and everything, especially if there will be significant updates anyway.
For fonts where you can’t get the OT versions, you might be able to get away with converting them to OT, like this:
David BlatnerKeymasterNo, you do not want to use OPI, unless you are using an OPI server (which I don’t think anyone does anymore)
David BlatnerKeymasterWow… I have not heard PCL in a very long time!
In general, you should be able to print to a non-PostScript printer without much trouble, but the result may be bitmapped. (You can use “Print as Image” in the Output tab of the Print dialog box. What is the benefit of using PCL instead?
What happens if you print directly from Acrobat? (You can use “Print as Bitmap” in the Advanced settings in Acrobat’s print dialog box.)
David BlatnerKeymasterAre you seeing Text to Image in InDesign 19.4? Is that what you’re referring to? I see it on their “what’s new” page, but they haven’t released it in the USA yet.
David BlatnerKeymasterGlad you figured that out! Yeah… character styles can sneak in like that.
Tip: You can place your cursor in the text and then look in the lower-left corner of the Character Styles panel to see if a style is being applied as part of a paragraph style.
David BlatnerKeymasterSo glad to hear it, Jim! Whew. That was bizarre. I’m sorry we couldn’t have been more helpful from here.
David BlatnerKeymasterWell, you can always go to indesign.uservoice.com to request or vote on feature requests. But I think the answer here is: probably only a small percentage of InDesign users use x-refs… and of that number, only a small percent need advanced or better features… and so third-party developers have stepped in to solve the problem.
