David BlatnerKeymasterNo, I don’t think this is controllable with any kind of style — not even object styles, which is very surprising and frustrating!
February 11, 2017 at 10:47 am in reply to: Mystery of missing hyphens when importing Word documents into InD CS6 #92143
David BlatnerKeymasterI have heard of weirdness like this… sometimes a solution is as simple as re-saving as docx from Word (instead of .doc)… or vice versa!
David BlatnerKeymasterHave you looked at https://stock.adobe.com ?
https://creativepro.com/adobe-stock-indesign.php
and
https://creativepro.com/designing-adobe-stock.phpI’m sure others can share their experiences, but I find that for most stock companies you have to judge the images yourself — that is, there are some great images, some good ones, and some blah ones.
David BlatnerKeymasterYes, Find/Change “all documents” is only the currently-open documents. But I think I would do it in groups of maybe 10… I don’t think I would trust it with 69 files at the same time!
There are only 66 books in the Bible, right? So I guess you have front matter in one… and maybe 2 others?
Can you email me directly at david @ indesignsecets.com with a screen capture of some of the pages of the bible? I am researching how InDesign users create Bibles and other religious texts.
David BlatnerKeymasterJohanna, your message says you “realized there was character style” but I think you mean you realized there was NOT a character style… so you created one, yes?
That is a great solution. Using a character style for italic words is the proper way to handle this. And, as you know, you can then apply a new paragraph style without losing the italic words.
It is similar to this tip:
https://creativepro.com/import-word-files-into-indesign-remove-local-formatting-but-keep-italics-and-bold.phpIt would be best if the other 68 documents also had an italic character style and used that for all italic words. That would ensure consistency. However, if that is too much work and you are only going to be printing the book, then it is probably okay if some documents use the character style and some do not.
I say “print” because if you are going to be exporting to EPUB or HTML then you do need to be very strict and consistent with those character styles!
One way to copy the character style to all the documents is to open a bunch of the files at the same time and use Find/Change (just like you did with the one document, but use All Documents).
February 9, 2017 at 7:32 am in reply to: Use Content Collector/Conveyor to Place on Existing Frame? #92082
David BlatnerKeymasterUnfortunately, while that is how many of us want the tool to work, that is not what it does. This tool only works with page objects… and because the image is inside a frame, it only grabs the whole frame (and the image in it).
David BlatnerKeymasterI have a title on Data Merge, but it does not include XML.
https://www.lynda.com/InDesign-tutorials/InDesign-Insider-Training-Data-Merge-Database-Publishing/143323-2.html
David BlatnerKeymasterNo, not really, except for this (kind of crazy) solution: https://creativepro.com/turning-off-hanging-punctuation-for-quotes-in-middle-of-a-paragraph.php
David BlatnerKeymasterHi Masood! I think the first step is to learn as much as you can about how XML works in InDesign. Here are some resources to start:
https://creativepro.com/formatting-text-xml-indesign.phpand Chad Chelius’ title at Lynda.com:
https://www.lynda.com/Design-tutorials/Creating-InDesign-Booklet-Using-XML/435134-2.html
David BlatnerKeymasterIf I had one recommendation of something to go learn, it would be: HTML/CSS — not necessarily for building web sites, but building web documents. For example, what does InDesign export to reflowable EPUB? Fixed layout EPUB? HTML? How can you manage/control/edit that? How can you get HTML into InDesign? (It’s currently harder than it should be!)
If I had a second recommendation, it would probably sound like a sales pitch: Come to CreativePro Week in Atlanta, May 22-26: https://creativeproweek.com
It’s where the past meets the present meets the future of publishing. It’s going to be important. Hope to see you there!
David BlatnerKeymasterMaybe select all the text and click the Remove Overrides button at the bottom of the Paragraph Styles panel? And make sure there are no character styles applied to those characters?
David BlatnerKeymasterIt looks like each one includes some of the same unicode values.
It would be like saying “if it’s a–m then do this, but if it’s h-q then do that.”For example, China goes from 3000 to efff, but Japan goes from 3040 to 309F. Well, everything from 3040 to 309F is inside the China range.
David BlatnerKeymasterIs the text at an angle? See:
Or is it really jagged? Like bitmapped? Are you viewing the PDF in Acrobat, or some other PDF viewer?
Is the text actually vector? Like, if you zoom in on it in the PDF, does it get better quality, or is it jaggy? You can’t upload images here, but you can post an image somewhere (like dropbox or imgur and put a link here)
David BlatnerKeymasterGreat question! Yes, just like outsourcing projects to overseas companies, automation has been coming to design and publishing for a long time, and will continue. If you consider yourself an “ID grunt,” then I think there’s probably good reason to worry. This would be a great time to expand past “grunt” status and master the tool, so that you can:
- Build high-quality templates that can be used by other grunts (or automated systems)
- Perform high quality in low-quantity projects (brochures, magazines, ads, etc.)
- Learn how to use or even write scripts
I don’t believe we can future-proof ourselves, but I don’t think robots will replace the majority of human-created design and publishing soon.
David BlatnerKeymasterUm… James Brown?
