My guess is that InDesign is opening it, but it’s off screen for some reason. Sometimes weird things happen. Try rebuilding your preferences: https://creativepro.com/resources/faq
Data Merge doesn’t normally work with tables… are you using a special script to do this? Or are you actually using data merge?
If it’s data merge, you can ask it to remove empty lines automatically. See:

Sam: LOL! Well, first of all you’re right that we don’t like that fix; but more importantly: It does NOT solve Michael’s problem. Try it! I think Minion Pro is baked in.
For others: here’s why Sam says we won’t like that fix:

and then we go on about it here, too:
Which setting are you talking about, Dwayne? Do you mean GPU?
As for the panel getting cut off, try rebuilding your preferences: https://creativepro.com/resources/faq
You don’t see a Place cursor? That is very strange. What happens? Does the image just appear? If so, perhaps you have a frame already selected on the page when you place?
As Kai said: there are scripts, several of which are available on this site. Search for “script table width” and you’ll find a bunch.
For example:

Here’s a write-up that follows up on Dwayne’s great advice:

Wow, that’s a lot of work. I don’t know what internal naming or system it uses. I think it’s much easier just to press Cmd-6 (to jump to the font field) then type “garde con light” and let the Font field filter for me.
