    In html5 with css and jquery, I can fairly easily make a show/hide button where the text to collapses to fill in the space taken up by whatever I am revealing when it is hidden, and then expands again when it is shown. css: hidden. How does one achieve this via indesign > interactive pdf? Can it be done using layers?

    You can use “Conditional Text” feature in InDesign found under the Window > Type & Tables

    Thanks for the links, Masood. Interesting, but it is not immediately obvious whether I can make them serve my purpose. I want that the document user can show or hide various notes to a block of text… Can I make the conditions button-activated for the user of a final document?

    With the Conditional Text you can hide from a single character to complete story. Regarding buttons, I think David will help you guide the best way.

    Masood is correct that this works great in InDesign… but unfortunately it does not translate into a PDF.
    PDF files are not dynamic like this, and what is easy in HTML/CSS is very difficult (or impossible) in PDF. You would have to make many different “buttons”, each one or more objects. For more details, see:
