Test Your Sign IQ
According to an essay by Thomas Ruff, Josef Schulz is a photographer of “industrial buildings that nobody would want to consider to be of any major architectural interest.” He often digitally “cleanses” his photos to remove the few signs of age or character.
Now Schulz has brought his method to photos of that ubiquitous member of modern society, the plastic sign. You can see his latest photo collection, the Sign Out photo series, at the Wiegand Gallery Web site.
While the philosophy behind Schulz’s work may be deep, I simply enjoyed seeing the blank faces of familiar signage. How many of their identities can you guess correctly?
