Monotype Imaging Announces Type Enhancements for Android

Got a fetish for Frutiger? An Urge for Univers? Or are you a pure bred Helvi-cat? If you’re an Android user, you may soon be able to use your favorite font in your phone’s user interface.

Monotype Imaging has released new software that promises to provide an unprecedented level of quality and control for typography on Android mobile devices. The software is called Type Enhancements for Android, and it can allow Android users to customize the look and feel of their devices by replacing the default UI font via an app called FlipFont.

FlipFont allows users to browse an online selection of fonts to purchase, and then download and install them. So if you have a hopeless Helvetica addiction, you can make that your phone’s font (for 99 cents).

For those who aren’t quite so picky about their UI fonts, Type Enhancements will allow manufacturers to create typographic themes for you to choose from.

Type Enhancements also offers the following features:

  • Full OpenType support for Indic, Arabic, Hebrew, and other languages.
  • Improved legibility through better text rendering at any point size or resolution.
  • Consistent appearance of web pages across devices with Web core fonts
  • Smart Gamma, which allows UI designers to optimize the appearance of text according to its color and the color of the background.
