How to Be a Better Graphic Designer

In the movie Spinal Tap, guitarist Nigel Tufnel proudly shows off his custom amplifier with volume knobs that “go to eleven.” Not to be outdone, our own Nigel (French) delivers the eleventh installment of his How to Be a Better Graphic Designer series in this month’s feature article. In it, our Nigel discusses the importance of developing a designer’s mindset by being intentional, making story-driven choices, actively observing the world around you, embracing constraints, and learning from your creative mistakes. It’s great stuff—and you won’t need earplugs.

I love the Tolkien quote, “Not all those who wander are lost,” but you never want people wandering around complex documents struggling to find the content they’re looking for. So, make it easy for them to navigate by including multiple tables of contents, as the InDesign wizard Pariah Burke explains.

In a follow-up to last month’s feature article, Chris Converse is back with a brand-new, members-only video on powerhouse features in Keynote. He shows you how to take your presentations to the next level by animating videos across slides, bringing data to life with slick interactive charts, color correcting images without a detour to Photoshop, and much more.

Our latest podcast was recorded live at CreativePro Week in Nashville. It features a lively conversation between Theresa Jackson and accessibility experts Chad Chelius and Dax Castro about very practical ways you can start creating more accessible documents. Hint: Small choices early on can yield big rewards.

While CreativePro Week 2026 is over, the Community Calendar is still packed with lots more to look forward to, including four more big online events. By the way, it’s not too soon to grab a discounted ticket to CreativePro Week 2027!

Snippets is loaded with fun and useful stuff, plus a discount code for a new tool that serves as a missing link for bringing content from Adobe Express back into InDesign.

Quick Wins has five important skills for anyone who works with PDFs in Acrobat (which is pretty much everyone, right?).

Our recent YouTube videos have amazing tips on InDesign, Photoshop, PowerPoint, Illustrator, Premiere, and Keynote.

One final note: If you’re like most folks, I bet you barely glance at the masthead of this magazine. But starting this month, it will feature a section called About the Cover, where our designer extraordinaire, Pam Sparks, will share a little bit of the thinking and process that went into the cover design.

And speaking of the cover, each month it will include a small typographic Easter egg for you to find. Need a clue? It’s David Blatner’s favorite character.

Cheers!
