The Inconsistent Indent Contest Answer and Winner

Solve this InDesign mystery for a chance at winning a great prize.

It’s time to reveal the solution—and the winner—for this month’s InDesignSecrets contest!

Here’s the scenario:

You open a file with a list in several sequential paragraphs and notice that some paragraphs seem to have a large right indent, while other paragraphs have text that goes all the way to the right side of the text frame.

When you check the paragraph settings, you see the right indent is set to zero for all paragraphs.

The same paragraph style is applied to all the list items, with no overrides.

There is nothing else on the spread that could be causing the text to wrap.

Why is the text wrapping in this manner?

Solution: In the paragraph style options for Indents and Spacing, Balance Ragged Lines was selected.

This creates the same effect as a right indent in paragraphs with more than one line of text. You can quickly check to see if a paragraph is using Balance Ragged Lines by putting your cursor in the paragraph and checking the Control panel menu.

And the winner of this contest is…

Satish Khankriyal

Satish wins full access for 3 months to the video archives for PePCon 2016 or the CreativePro Conference (up to $495 value!).

Thanks to everyone who entered, and be on the lookout for another contest with a new great prize next month!
