How to Reset the Recent Documents List in InDesign

With this InDesign tip, you can refresh the display of recent documents in the File menu.

Ever wish you could reset the list of recent documents in InDesign’s File menu? Here’s how.

In the File Handling area of InDesign’s Preferences dialog box (File > Preferences > File Handling), set the Number of Recent Items to Display to zero. Click OK to close the dialog box.

Then, reopen Preferences and change the number of Recent Items to Display to whatever you want. You don’t need to quit and restart InDesign. You’ve now erased the old list of documents and InDesign will keep track of the list of documents you open from that point forward.

  1. What if the selection area is greyed out? Can’t change it from 0 because it can’t be accessed. Is there a work-around for that scenario?

  2. Mine only lets me increase it to 30 recents, not any number I want. I thought that if I changed it to show only one page or if the thumbnails were smaller I could have more than 30 show, but it still limited the recents to 30. (What I would like even better is if if I could set it to the files opened in the last 30 days.)

  3. But they’re still in the registry…

I don’t think this works for CS3 … is there a method for that version?
