      Hello,

Does anyone have any recommendations for a reputable place to purchase images for use on a book cover (print)? Most of the reviews i have found for the different sites have horror stories about nebulous charges or low quality images. I am most concerned about the quality of the image but i dont have hundreds of dollars to spend per image….

Any feedback would me much appreciated!!

      Thanks!

      :D

Have you looked at https://stock.adobe.com ?

I’m sure others can share their experiences, but I find that for most stock companies you have to judge the images yourself — that is, there are some great images, some good ones, and some blah ones.

      Christine,

I’ll give a big +1 to Adobe stock. Adobe seems to have the right image for me 95% of the time and they are all indexed very well. As David says, they also have some “blah” images, but I just scroll past those.

On a side note, a friend of mine did a Women’s History timeline book and the photography were sky-high for her with multiple images per page. Owning the rights to photographs is a fine way to make money.

I’m in a print shop and we use Shutterstock on a subscription basis. It’s great for dealing with a wide variety of clients; we get 25 images a day, and the quality is always very good. May be too much for your project. It’s worth image googling and seeing which stock sites have the kind of images you want. Another site if you are looking for region-specific images: https://www.designpics.com

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions!! I originally did check out adobe but they seemed on the more expensive end. I also do not have Creative Cloud (i am using ID CS6) and i wasnt sure if that was necessary in order to use Adobe stock.

One more question…… with all of the stock images sites, i know the sample image they give you is low-res but can i assume that the quality will improve vastly once im working with the high-res “paid for” file?

Yes it will, you have just downloaded a placeholder version thats probably got a big watermark across the image. When you go to purchase the hi re you normally get options for which file size you need for your project, all priced accordingly of course.
