Yupo Announces Winners of 2005 Wally Awards

A distinguished panel of five judges has selected three designs for top honors in Yupo Corporation America’s third annual “Wally Awards.”  The winning entries best showcased creativity, originality, and functionality in leveraging the unique attributes of YUPO® synthetic paper. The judges also nominated twelve additional entries for a fourth Wally Award in the “Designer’s Choice” category. One winner in this category will be chosen by online voters beginning in December. “We were extremely pleased by the number of entries and quality of this year’s projects,” says Paul Mitcham, National Marketing Manager for Yupo Corporation.  “Designers continue to awe and inspire us.  Each year I am amazed by the way they leverage YUPO’s unique durability and color reproduction to create fascinating, eye catching applications.”
The Wally Award winners were chosen from among numerous entries ranging from brochures, labels, media kits, advertising inserts, menus, posters, and maps to watercolor and acrylic paintings.
Interactive Appeal
One of the three Wally Awards was given to Cynthia Cortes for the Tischa Industries Media Kit. The trapezoid shaped, wax sealed envelope revealed a butterfly theme that was carried throughout the piece.  A New York based graphic and interactive design, branding and printing house, Tischa’s media kit showcases the full capabilities of the company’s expertise with methods including: die-cutting, perforations, and UV printing on YUPO 100lb Cover stock and YUPO 62lb Translucent.  YUPO was chosen because of the beauty of the reproduction as well its textual and interactive appeal.
Extreme Durability
Another Wally was awarded for the Backpacker Magazine’s Waypoint Maps.  A special insert to the magazine for hiking and trekking enthusiasts, the insert featured six perforated wallet-sized maps of the best hiking trails around the country.  The maps are designed to fit into a lariat to wear around the neck on difficult hikes.  YUPO was chosen as the substrate for its extreme durability and razor sharp printing, the detailed maps can withstand conditions as rugged as the trails they illustrate.
Perfect Print
A third Wally Award went to Peter Hose of Unique Printers of Cicero, IL for Outside Magazine’s 2006 Media Kit.  The wire bound media kit features stunning outdoor photography and athletic models playing extreme sports.  The media kit’s interactive translucent overlays on YUPO 62 lb Translucent dazzled the judges with the realistic skin tones and clarity.  The printer attempted to use other translucent stock but discovered that in four-color process it always looked modeled.  YUPO allowed them to achieve the clean results they sought.
Winners of the 2005 Wally Awards receive a cash prize of US$1,000, in addition to a Pantone® Color Cue® 2, and a customized Wally Award statue. The winning entries are featured on the www.yupo.com and www.wallyaward.com.
