I’m glad you got it working, and that it was your machine that was the culprit.

I don’t see any need for stylesheets to control typographers quotes. I think the main preferences suffice. And the preference applies to all stylesheets anyway. It would just be redundant.

So far as change case options–I think this was discussed at one time, and it’s not as easy as it sounds to program.

You explained very well, Gert. I was trying to find a way to explain it but you beat me to it.

It does NOT look like that way when I opened the file you sent me. My palette shows 1-4, not 1,2,4,3. So I’m guessing it’s a bug on your end with the interactive thing.

You are not going mad. Something is definitely going on as evidenced by the screen shot you sent me. The file you sent me, however, is perfectly okay when I view it.

When I look at it, it’s numbered 1 through 4 in the actual pages, and 1-4 in the palette preview.

I’m not sure why you’re unlinking and overriding pages three and four and moving four to three.

glad you got it straightened out. It’s amazing what you can do with search and replaces.

So far as I know, you can’t control that via style sheets.

    What plug-in are you using?

^^I too, had thought of that however: I believe that if you simply replace a hard return (even though the number 4 before it) with just a hard return–you may lose the formatting on the following paragraph.

I’ve had that happen when messing around with replacing hard returns.

If the art file was saved correctly (bitmapped I believe), then once it’s positioned, select it with the white arrow unti it turns into the hand), then go to your swatches palette.

Now in the top left of the palette there are two tiny boxes. One is for the fill or the picture box, and one is the color for the art. I’m not sure which is which off hand. But play around with it.

If the first one you choose fills the picture box as a color, then you know it’s the other one. Click that to bring it forward and try again. It should then change the art color itself.

If it’s greyed out, then you may need to resave your tiff as bitmapped.

I don’t mean save as a .bmp, but rather in the color you choose bitmapped.

I’m not really sure how to explain it, as we have the gal who does our art do all the resaving.

in reply to: How to find help learning how to layout a publication? #69502

Tom–it’s not so easy to answer your question. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone has different ideas of what looks nice and what doesn’t. For example, at the company I work at, there are several of us who do pagination and layout. And we all do things a bit differently.

You can’t attach or post a file directly to this forum, but if you have Drop Box or a 4Shared account or something, you can upload it there, and then post the link to your file here.

I guess I don’t know what you are trying to do.

While you can’t upload a file directly to this forum, if you have a Drop Box or 4Shared account or something, you can upload it to there and then provide the link to it here.

Are you saying that the number is at the end of the paragraph and followed by a paragraph return?

I’m not good at GREP, but what about a simple search and replace?

Search for the 4 followed by a paragraph return and replace with the color red (Or any color not being used in the job).

Then search for a red 4 and delete it.

If it’s not that (i.e., a hard return following each of those 4’s, then I’m not sure.

in reply to: Delete all line breaks? #69340

Well, normally no more than two hyphens in a row, double-hyphenated words breaking at the end of a line, loose lines or lines that are too tight. That’s what most proof readers look for. It varies with some of the old timers. They worry about kerning between this or that letter, when it’s really pretty much okay the way it is. They tend to get too picky.
