    Dieter was right :)

I forgot all about the built-in search/replace that InDesign has. Well, I didn’t forget, but forgot what it was called.

Glad you got the help you needed, Andy.

    Have a good weekend.

Hey Andy–things are well with me. I hope the same for you.

That is weird about what you’re going through, though I have had that happen to me in the past with newer versions of Indesign. Sometimes Indesign gets a brain fart.

This may sound odd–but search for a single space and replace with two spaces. Then search for two spaces and replace with one. You have have to do that second search/replace a second time.

That may force InDesign to wake up.

Make sure your find dialogue is empty of everything except for those two spaces. Make sure no styles or formatting is in effect.

Also uncheck whole words if that’s checked.

Nope. -1000 is the max for me.

I have no idea how he got -1240.

    Glad we could help.

Have the head styled to “keep with” and not “keep previous.” That way the the text fills out and the head starts at the top of the next column/page.

Well, I don’t use CC2018 that much, but I’ve seen that in previous versions. And that square w/red box is the overflow marker.

Sometimes it can happen when your paragraph style is set up for single line composer AND the hyphenation is set to not break across columns/pages. If that’s the cases, it’s because of that conflict. There is no way InDesign can avoid that hyphen unless paragraph composer is used.

Another idea: Was there a character style applied that has no break attributes?

21 inches seems like a lot to have to pull out the box to check it. Yikes!

I’m leaning towards your hyphenation settings or no breaks.
