David BlatnerKeymasterHm… I don’t know if this will help, but you should know this tip… it’s great for reflowing things like yearbook images:

David BlatnerKeymasterStan, I encourage you to check out some of the resources on this page for GREP help:
https://indesignsecrets.com/resources/grepIn general, here’s the rule: If you put something in parentheses in the Find What, then you can use it in the Replace With.
For example, let’s say I search for
(\d\d)(\d\d)and replace it with$2-$1. And my text includes 1234. After the find/change the text will read 34-12
David BlatnerKeymasterWow, you really don’t like ligatures! :-)
Unfortunately, InDesign is more complicated than that, actually. There are many places that you could potentially get ligatures. I would encourage you to look into how paragraph and character styles work in InDesign. Maybe watch my course on LinkedIn Learning called “InDesign Essential Training”

David BlatnerKeymasterSorry for the problem on the site! That was crazy. Tech support got us back up and running again. I voted for your suggestion!

David BlatnerKeymasterYou’re not missing anything. This is something I’ve complained about for literally 20 years.
Maybe see if any one has posted that here:
https://indesign.uservoice.com
if not, submit it and tell us where to go to vote for it. :-)
David BlatnerKeymasterCan you tell us where you are turning ligatures off? What setting are you changing?
In general, ligatures is a setting inside paragraph styles.
David BlatnerKeymasterFor “weird” page numbering like that, you can sometimes use paragraph numbering instead of page numbering, which I outline here:
https://indesignsecrets.com/use-numbered-lists-instead-of-auto-page-numbering.php
David BlatnerKeymasterOlivier, you get extra bonus points for using PatternMaker! :-)
I love all those plug-ins, but they can be an issue after even a small update. Like Adobe released 15.0.2 in February… even little “dot releases” like that can break plug-ins. Not always, but they can.
David BlatnerKeymasterThe article below talks about where the prefs are stored. Tim’s suggestion of setting-and-quitting is a good one (prefs are only saved when you quit).
But if you’re crashing daily, something is wrong. My guess is that you have an outdated plug-in (like a font management auto-activation plug-in) or a corrupted document or font or graphic or something that is causing that.

David BlatnerKeymasterIf you have an Illustrator graphic that has a 2 point thick stroke, and you place it in InDesign: When you make it 200% size in InDesign, the stroke will be 4 points. If you make it 50% size, the stroke will be 1 pt.
If you need the stroke to stay the same as you scale it, you should create the shape in InDesign. Or you can probably copy from Illustrator and paste it into InDesign as an editable shape.
David BlatnerKeymasterAnn, consider the tips in these articles:
https://indesignsecrets.com/auto-format-superscript-and-subscript-numbers-using-grep-styles.php
and
https://indesignsecrets.com/quick-grep-to-superscript-ordinals.php
Sometimes you may need to use a tool like MathTools from movemen to create complex equations.
David BlatnerKeymasterAs others have pointed out, this is usually due to “transparency flattening” for older printers (or when you export to an old PDF version, such as “acrobat 4”. If you export to PDF/X-4, and your printer has a RIP that can handle this, then you should not have this problem anymore.
Tim Cole and Rufus Deuchler did a very funny video about this many years ago:

David BlatnerKeymasterI’m so glad you found that solution, Phillis! Thank you for sharing it, so others can find it..
Awesome that you can participate in CreativePro Week this year. Looking forward to it.

David BlatnerKeymasterYeah, I love grep styles, but nested styles are so much easier! :-)
