Sure, there are many third-party options for database publishing. See:

Keith: I agree that it would be cool if InDesign could look inside the Illustrator file and copy out the CMYK files… but it can’t.

You might request that here: https://indesign.uservoice.com/

Keith: Add Unnamed Colors does not add colors from inside placed graphics. It only collect unnamed colors created in InDesign (for example, with the Colors panel)

Thanks, David! That worked. It’s great to have (and share) all kinds of examples to draw from.

David, if you scan them and zip them up, maybe put them in a dropbox or onebox or google drive location? And then put a link here so we can download and view them?

Sorry that I gave you wrong information. I did not read your original post carefully enough.

Yes, the problem is that variables are considered a single character in InDesign! The only way to format some words inside a variable is to convert it to regular text. There is a script to do that:

Try choosing “Add All Unnamed Colors” from the Swatches panel menu (in the upper-right corner of the panel). That should add all the variations as swatches. Then you can delete them and replace them with [Black]

You can also search for variables of various sorts in the @ menu inside the Find/Change dialog box. So you could search for that variable and then apply a character style to it.

To do it automatically, you could apply the character style using a GREP Style:

Good one, Linda! In many Mac apps, you can also hover the cursor over the green dot in the upper-left corner… that opens a little menu that lets you assign a window to a display. However, it does not appear to work in Adobe apps that I’ve tried.

One other thing: I don’t know why, but InDesign often resizes its window to fill the screen… which is sometimes what I want, but sometimes not! I have an app/utility that resizes windows for me to specific sizes (such as “left side of monitor”), but after I use it, InDesign resets itself to fill the screen. Really annoying. But if I resize using the utility and then change the size of the window manually by dragging a corner or edge, even just a few pixels, then InDesign will remember it.
