  • i'm with eugene on this. data merge would work.

for argument's sake lets say that the newsletter is 8pp. produce the newsletter as you normally would EXCEPT for the parts which change which is where the data merge components would be placed, even if it is only on one page of the 8pp.

once the client approves the art, it is simply a case of rather than using the export to pdf in the file menu, use the export to pdf from the data merge flyout and export one record at a time. once exported to the desired PDF settings, you should find that one 8pp pdf is exported with one variety of customer's logo. it is simply a case of repeating this process through all the records.

it'd be nice if the entire file could be merged into the 20 separate 8pp pdfs in one hit but there is a bug in the data merge export to pdf which ought to allow this, so until it is fixed it is a case of exporting each record one at a time…

in reply to: How to include Title case or Sentence case in styles? #59680

Agree with Eugene – can't do this.

However, there is a script which will convert styles to a desired case.

yes, it is prepress' job to apply creep to saddle-stitched artwork. however, i still think it is important that designers understand the phenomenon of creep and how prepress operators compensate for it when imposing artwork, mainly concerning cross-overs.

With the imposing software at my work (we use AGFA Apogee) the program compensates for creep by literally moves the pages closer to the spine until the centre spread is reached. This is fine for artwork where there are no cross-overs, but artwork which DOES have cross-overs need those images to remain where they were while letting the other content be adjusted. This becomes most visible on the centre-spread.

I say this after receiving a 56pp portrait saddle-stitched DL booklet last week which needed to be printed on 150gsm stock. Every page had a crossover on it, but all pages needed creep too. If I had the native files, i could have kept the cross-overs where they were on one layer, and moved the content and type towards the spine on the second layer… if i had native files!

Was good experience however in working out the increments per 2pp to move all the art (except for the cross-overs) towards the centre spreads :)

in reply to: Print Related Q: Paper Weight Calculator? #58727

there's a brilliant calculator that a competitor of mine offers on their website:

    https://www.printgraphics.com.a…..and-creep/

in australia and europe, what jongware says rings true, and that is that paper specs are usually given in grams. when i lived in canada though, the GSM measurement was never on the pack though, it was normally written 20# (e.g. 20lb/500 sheets), but the paper supplier should have the GSM measurement on their website. so could still find it, but it just took longer.

don't forget that there are other ways to save on postage, such as barcoded mail if it is offered in the OP's region.

in reply to: PDF Security Defaults #58127

if pdfs are being exported (not printed to pdf) go to the security tab of the pdf export, make the settings there, and make sure that the settings are saved as using the “save preset” button.

    does this help?

in reply to: [req] Change Case Of Selected Style script for indesign cs4 #58056

the script (which can be found @ https://creativepro.com/downloads/scripts/ChangeCaseOfSelectedStyle.jsx) still works, BUT in CS4 or CS5 a subfolder has to be made called “Version 4.0 Scripts” within the scripts folder and the script dragged into here. working with CS5 and it works a treat.

there is a script by Thomas Silkjær (https://indesigning.net/indesign-scripts) which is able to index words which are a particular color. does this help?

in reply to: Searching for a script to import variable images … #57869

    actually, i mis-read your post… sorry :(

the words are within the text and you want to replace the text with the actual picture… got it.

this one works by finding text which has @ symbols at the start and end of the filename.

in reply to: What on earth is going on here??!?!? #57455

So collywolly, when I try and export to Acrobat 6, it will not save directl as a PDF:X-1a:2001, but instead saves as a 'PDF:X-1a:2001 [modified]' … is this routine?

yes, this is normal. it is just saying that there is a modification on top of a preset. it isn't actually changing the existing preset unless the option “save preset” is selected in the bottom left and then saving over the top of the old one… and i don't think its possible to save over the presets in []… but could be wrong.

in reply to: What on earth is going on here??!?!? #57409

what version PDF is being exported? acrobat v4 or higher? i think bob is on the right track here, and would recommend that in the very first PDF export dialog box, that the version be turned to acrobat v6. this will not flatten the artwork and leave that up to the RIP to determine how to flatten prior to print. this will remove the lines that are seen.

FWIW these white lines are of no concern to me going to offset printing plates, BUT to digital copiers i'd leave the artwork unflattened and let the digital copier RIP (a fiery for me) do the flattening.

by default, the stroke is centreline, so the moment a 1pt stroke is added to a rectangle for example, its size will increase by 1pt (.5pt left, .5pt right, .5pt top, .5pt bottom). to avoid this, once the stroke is made, go to the stroke panel and make sure that rather than being centreline, change the stroke to “align stroke to inside” and the rectangle will be the same size as it was prior to adding the stroke.

i don't know how to make “align stroke to inside” a default though, which would save the process of fixing this every time.

in reply to: Data Merge #56643

i use datamerge to make planner diaries and the OP has answered their own question in their post: “set up my excel file differently”.

start by making a new indesign file with two pages (not facing pages but two pages as a readers spread by turning “allow document pages to shuffle” off). set this “master spread” up as desired, leaving positionals for the variable data to fit into.

the real magic happens in excel. the first row is the header row, and this is where titles such as WEEK, MONDAY, TUESDAY, etc would go. the reason that i give each day its own data field is that indesign DOESN'T have what MS word has in merging: the “next record” feature, which would make life a lot simpler, so this is the workaround. i don't agree that this would be difficult provided that sums and formulii were used to create the dates, rather than being keyed in manually.

the second row is then the guts of the data, and because excel handles dates really well, one only has to enter 01/01/11 for example to get a date to appear in a cell. from there, making the date increase is a matter of using sums in the adjacent cells. also, the cells can be formatted to be as they appear in the example, or read such as 1 Jan 2011; Saturday January 1 2011, etc… and this is all done by using the format cells feature of excel.

ultimately, when all the data for the year has been created, export it as a txt file rather than a csv and then use the datamerge feature of indesign to put it all together.

i must add though, if the “next record” feature existed in indesign, datamerge would be so much better and would allow for the construction of catalogues, mailing labels (not that software of this pricetag should be delegated to such a rubbish task), etc WITHOUT having to use a third party plug-in or brush up on XML.
