Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberJPannier, auto-generated TOCs and Indexes are ignored when you export to EPUB. I showed in my Lynda.com title that meanwhile refers to how you can export an auto-generated TOC to RTF format, then import that into the ID file, which forces its inclusion in the EPUB. You could do the same thing with an index, I suspect.
However you're going to have a problem with links. The (linked) page numbers don't apply to an EPUB, since it's reflowable… there is no concept of page numbers. (Except, just recently, with the Kindle format, when you need to refer to a page in the printed version of the book.) Honestly I'm not sure how people are dealing with indexes in their EPUBs. Maybe someone else can chime in, or you can post the question to a forum that's specializing in ebook creation, like https://mobileread.com/.

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberHi there, “meanwhile” … I'm having a little trouble understanding your questions. Are you the same person who posted a similar question to the blog as a comment? (where I think I was able to help you somewhat?)
AM
Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberIn regards to the command being grayed out … have you tried usual troubleshooting, such as rebuilding preferences? Experimenting with a simple one-page file? Logging in to your comp as a test user and trying from there?
All those “Export for” commands are actually scripts, which should be in your Adobe InDesign CS4 > Scripts folder. For example, there should be a subfolder in there named “XHTML for Digital Editions” which has a bunch of files and subfolders within it. Do those all look intact?
Re the images resizing, that's because Liz uses CSS to change the size of the images to a % of the screen width. I don't cover that in my title … but I did move it to the outline for an as-yet-to-be-recorded “Advanced EPUB formatting” course. ;-D Liz does cover using auto-resizing image CSS in her book, so grab that and take a look.

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberHowever, the tool that is the closest to the Format Painter tool in Word is the Eyedropper tool in InDesign. The tool that looks like an Eyedropper! :-) You use it to pick up formatting (copy) and “drop it” (paste) onto other text.
It doesn't work exactly the same as the Format Painter tool, and in many ways is much more powerful (try double-clicking it to see its settings). Fool around with it, and read the online help instructions on it:
https://help.adobe.com/en_US/in…..6e64a.html
But in the end, you're going to find Paragraph Styles and Character styles much faster, especially being able to apply them automatically in the Word import dialog box, or via Find/Change, or with Quick Apply.

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberWorking from the complete epub file, you would need to:
- Unzip it (extract the contents) into individual files
- Remove the XHTML files and jpg/gif images representing the content you don't want to include
- Edit the content.opf file and the toc.ncx file to remove all references to the deleted content
- Possibly edit the XHTML file(s) containing links to missing content, such as an HTML TOC, if you included one… removing the links (though you could keep the text intact so people could see what they're missing)
- Rezip the file, converting it back to an EPUB
- Validate the EPUB again
In many cases it'd be easier to just create a new, sample-size INDD file and export to EPUB, especially if you have a lot of cross-references, footnotes, an index, etc.

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberWhich version of InDesign are you using? Are you fully patched to the latest update for that version? I believe CS5 is up to 7.03 and CS4 is up to 6.0.6.
How long is your document? How long is the story in which you have conditional text … I mean, does it extend over 8 pages? 80? 800? Have you tried seeing if you get the same crash-y behavior on a test copy of the file that's just a portion of it, like 10 pages?

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberIt's not clear from your post if you are supposed to be using an InDesign/InCopy workflow or not (I mean, if that's how you and your company do things). I'll guess not, since you seem mystified.
In that case, it sounds like you somehow inadvertently exported text frames to InCopy format. The InCopy export commands are about a half-inch above the Story Editor command in the Edit menu. I'm not quite sure how you could have done that accidentally, since the InCopy fly out menu looks quite diff. than the lone Story Editor menu choice.
Anyhoo…
The red circle icon is a feature of the InCopy workflow and it's telling you that the original ICML file (the exported InCopy file) to which that text frame is linked is now missing. You probably have a large text frame on each page, so it looks like the icon is for the page. You'll see the icon in the Links panel too. You get this if you move the ICML files or rename them or delete them, just as how it works with linked images.
To get rid of the red circle icons you just need to break the link(s) from the text frames on the page to the external ICML files. (The text in the InDesign file will remain intact and editable, don't worry.) The easiest way to break the link (for someone not familiar with the workflow) is to open the Links panel, select the ICML files — you can click a column header at the top to sort by status or type so they'll all group together — and then choose Unlink from the Links panel menu.
If there is a possibility that this INDD file is/was part of an InCopy workflow … maybe you're a new hire who stumbled into a production folder? … check w/the production manager or whoever before you do anything else.

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberSara, I'll need more info. But first, have you seen the box for yourself on the editor's workstation?
Assuming yes … Is the editor working on an assignment or on a layout file? If another InCopy user opens the same file do they see the same box? If it's an assignment file, have you tried “pushing” an update: selecting the assignment file in your assignments panel and then choosing Update Selected Assignment (even though it's not out of date)?

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberI've heard of it when:
– The editor is working on an Assignment file (ICMA) and the designer did not update the assignment file in InDesign. (In InDesign, saving changes to the INDD file via File > Save does not save changes to the Assignment file. Look for little yellow Out of Date triangles next to assignment names in your Assignments panel to see if this is the case.)
and when:
– The editor is working on the Layout file (INDD) in InCopy and the designer did not save changes to the INDD file in InDesign … editors can't see any changes the designer hasn't saved to disk yet.
and when:
– The editor is working on the Layout or an Assignment file, designer has saved all changes properly, but the editor forgets to choose File > Update Design in in InCopy. This would only happen if the editor has the file open concurrent with the designer saving changes. They should see an “Out of Date” message appear in their title bar. Choosing Update Design will fix it, also, closing and opening the file will fix it.
hope that helps!

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberGreat workaround! What do you think, Steve?
Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberHave you looked at Michael Ninness' title over at Lynda.com, “Interactive Documents and Presentations”?
https://www.lynda.com/home/Disp…..lpk2=48367
He has lots of examples of interactive publications there, and of course he teaches how you can create them yourself. It's mostly InDesign CS4, with some Acrobat 9 and Flash CS4 stuff in there. Though it may be out of date for you if you have CS5, there is still alot that is the same. I believe Fritz (our contributor) just finished recording an update for that title, using CS5, at lynda.com. Not sure when it'll be out.
Also I've always been partial to Michael Murphy's videocast he did a few years ago where he created a beautiful PDF with movies from his vacation in Europe. It's from 2007, but it's still worth watching:
Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberI was able to create a PDF of thumbnails in Snow Leopard. I'm using ID CS5 and Acro 9, but I don't think it makes a diff.
In InDesign, go to File > Print and set up the thumbnails how you want them, and anything else. Then just choose PostScript fie from the Printer dropdown menu.
Do you not have that option in your Printer menu? I didn't do anything special to my system to get it to appear there.

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberEugene, excellent workaround! I agree, it has to be a bug that CS5 won't highlight found text in a locked frame during a normal Find/Change. Good to know it works in the GREP pane (where you could do just about the same type of plain text Find ) Thanks!

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberWow, I can see how this new behavior would really mess up your workflow. I'm not sure though how quickly Adobe can turn around a feature request like you suggest (lock position or position & content). Perhaps if you posted this to the InDesign scripting forum, someone might know of a script or could build one for your company at a low cost that would at least unlock these items for you?
https://forums.adobe.com/commun….._scripting
In my CS5, the Find in Locked Stories isn't working. I get an alert, “The found object was locked or on a locked layer.” and that's it. It doesn't highlight the word or tell me which frame it's in (and the open-story-editor trick doesn't work). Is this just my wonky copy?
