Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberIn case people aren't familiar with Jongware's Preptext.jsx script, it's a cross-platform script that goes through an InDesign file and when it finds overridden text (like bolded words or italicized words), it creates a character style and applies the style to the word. It's a miracle worker!
Here's a screen shot of a typical problem child bit of text:

In the middle of the paragraph, the words “Despite” and “cultural” are examples of overridden text.
You can download the IDML version of the above (comes with all the paragraph and nested styles you see applied) if you want to test it for yourself here:

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberYes, verified. Has nothing to do with a book… it happens even with a single document.
I only tested with and without an ampersand, but it may be more special characters as well.
I'll send a message to some Adobe folks, but you should also file a bug report here:
Adobe – Feature Request/Bug Report Form
Good catch!
Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberWow … that's a pretty big bug! At the least, they should put up an alert warning the user that ampersands aren't allowed or something.
I'll see if I can reproduce it here.

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberHi Sarah,
That's strange. Hmm. Does it happen with all your INDB book docs or just this one?

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberTurn off the Embed Fonts checkbox, which is enabled by default. You'll find it in the Content section of the EPUB Export Options dialog box.

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberIs it just this doc, or every doc?
Try exporting to IDML (File > Export and choose IDML format), then open that IDML file, save as with a new name.

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberNo, the “original” option isn't there anymore. I'm not privy to exactly why they removed it, but my guess is that many more people used it by mistake than took the time to optimize their original images (scaling, cropping, etc.).
It's not as plug-and play, but after you optimize your original images (and before you replace the ones in the EPUB's images folder), you can easily use Bridge's Batch Rename function to rename them with _fmt after it and replace the jpeg extension with jpg.

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberJongware, good to know!
The client's decided to take on the job of combining the files and manually re-doing the articles himself, since I can't start on it for a few days anyway.
It feels like a bug, or at least, a missed step during beta testing.

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberI would imagine they are hand-coding this, or using whatever web development app they normally use.
Their stuff really *is* amazing, isn't it? But that demo3 book … you can't buy it on the iBookstore. It's a proof of concept.
I believe their interactive map is done with hotspots on an SVG file.

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberHi Anish, I replied on the other forum thread you started here:
Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberSorry, Anish, you cannot export multi-column layout from InDesign to EPUB. The split/span paragraph style has no equivalent in CSS. It's a great feature request, though: Adobe – Feature Request/Bug Report Form
The work that Walrus Books is doing is pushing the edge of what's possible w/EPUBs. They have an incredible demo of what's possible with HTML 5 and CSS3 in other parts of their site; but I don't know of any visual layout program that can export to that yet. It *might* be possible with Dreamweaver CS 5.1, have you tried that?
BTW that Walrus Books URL you include leads to a post about enhanced ebooks but the post doesn't describe multi-columned layouts. It does show embedded video, and that you can do with InDesign CS5.5.
However at this point only the Apple iBooks app is capable of showing embedded video in an EPUB. They represent about 15% of the eBook marketplace. FYI.
You might want to check out my video on EPUBs at Lynda.com; and/or read Liz Castro's book about it. Those would give you a good grounding on what's possible with real world EPUBs these days and what InDesign is capable of outputting.

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberYes the drop caps are still a bit glitchy. But the “span char-style-override-1” should correspond to the drop cap in the HTML file. Doesn't it?
In any case, a batch find/change is necessary to swap out that code for your css dropcap class.

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberThanks Michael. From everything I've read on this topic, you're encountering a failure of the Kindle software/hardware, specifically its “paragraph composer.” Nothing you can do about it, unfortunately.

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberYes you need to install Bridge, but unless you *uninstalled* it at some point, it should be there already. Installing any product of the CS or any flavor of the CS automatically installs Bridge.
When you start browsing in MiniBridge, you'll see that it needs to start up Bridge in the background.

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberWhat David said. EPUB does not support 2-col text formatting. Do you want it to? How readable will the text in your 2 columns be when someone's reading the book on an iPhone?
EPUB 3 spec should be able to support 2-col text but the same design considerations would need to be made.
In the meantime you can create a 2-col table, but remember that some ereaders choke when they need to break a row between page views.
Why does it need to be 2-col? I'm just curious. What's the content? Or is it that the author/publisher whatever wants the same layout for epub as for print/PDF?
