Type and Politics Make Strange Bedfellows

The Typolitic blog explores the connections between type and design and political concepts. The scope of the blog focuses on the deeper meanings of the messages being conveyed through the chosen typography. The design work is submitted by undergraduate students from design schools worldwide (though only Australia and England are currently represented). Contributions—including those from experts studied as a part of the students’ coursework—provide an interesting back-and-forth discussion between the established and novice.

Type as political statement

The idea is to get students to explore beyond just the form and function of type in their designs, and to delve into the deeper meaning and consequences brought about through typography. While on the surface that might sound like a lofty goal, it also drives home the point that how you convey a message is just as important as the message itself. I would love to have heard Marshall McLuhan’s comments on these projects!
