With the holidays come a wealth of photo opportunities. Some may be formal family portraits you shoot with your SLR, but many others will be candids you capture with a mobile phone.
If you have an iPhone with iOS 5, you can improve those snapshots by using a cable release to trip the shutter, thereby cutting down on camera shake. Does it sound crazy to buy and carry around a cable release for a cell phone? You don’t have to — it already exists in the headset Apple includes with every iPhone.
On the website ApertureExpert.com, forum member Michael Ball (“cycomachead”) noted that iOS5 introduced the ability for you to use the phone’s Volume Up button to take a picture and to start and stop video. He discovered that this also works with the Volume Up control on headsets! Ball says that many other headsets with volume controls — even wireless Bluetooth headsets — can also trip the iPhone’s shutter.
Commenters on Ball’s post noted that the Volume Up control can also trigger third-party apps, such as Camera+, as well as the iPhone’s built-in camera.
