      Hello,

I’m working on a publication and have found several words hyphenated where, according to the dictionary, they shouldn’t be hyphenated, such as “autho-rization”. This was an automatic, not a manual, hyphen.

I have hyphenation set to like 2 in a row with words not hyphenated unless there are at least 6 letters before the break. But I’m assuming my settings shouldn’t impact where words are hyphenated, should they?

Shouldn’t the rules of where a word is able to be hyphenated remain despite my settings?

      Thanks
      Jane

As maggs wrote, this may be a language setting. I wrote this up yesterday:

If you mean in that Paragraph Style > Advanced Character Formats: I have English: USA already set.

Under Preferences > Dictionary: at the top it says English: USA but Hyphenation says: Hunspell. Do I want proximity instead?

      Thanks,
      Jane

Highlight some text where the hyphenation is wrong, then check the language at the top of the screen. If no language is shown, there is more than one language in that text. With the text still highlighted, change the language to English USA to see if you get the proper hyphenation (language works on a character basis). Hope this works for you.

No, not in Preferences. In the paragraph style. Or click inside the text, set the Control panel to Character Formatting mode, and look for the Language pop-up menu (or in the Character panel).

Bizarre. I highlighted the text and it says English:USA but it’s still hyphenating “autho-rization”. If I select English: UK, it corrects it.

So, perhaps that one word is a fluke.

Thanks for all your help guys. At least I now know to pay close attention.

Upon further review, check your user dictionary (highlight text, right click, go to spelling, user dictionary, click on word, click on hyphenate, it will show where the word is hyphenated). The words in the English USA setting could be hyphenated incorrectly.
