Hi guys, I need someone's help.

I'm creating the layout for a magazine on indesign, and it seems when i put in thing like 'Text Wrap' for example, the box of the text wrap does not show, however when I export the file to PDF, these lines show for some reason.

I also noticed that when I zoom in further, the lines do not become thicker or larger, but they do still show. The fact that they do not become thicker when I zoom in, that seems to indicate that these lines are not actual objects but hyperthetical lines, is that correct?

This also occurs around the borders of certain pictures. For example I have just feathered the edges of a picture, to make it blend with the background, and this looks fine in Indesign, but when I export to PDF there are these very thin white lines around the edges of the picture again.

Anyone have any idea what's going on, how to rememdy it, or whether or not it needs remedying at all ???

This sounds like stitching which is the border of where the transparency is flattened. If you export your PDF using Acrobat 5 or higher compatibility, these lines will not exist.

Further, they shouldn't print to a high resolution device such as a press, but they could show up on a desktop printer.

Do the white hairlines go away if you turn off the Smooth and Enhance checkboxes in the Page Display pane of Acrobat's Preferences dialog box?

Bob – hmm i had a feeling this may be the case.

David – when I untick those optinos some of the lines dissapear but not all – and some of them reappear and dissapear quite randomly depending on the Zoom percentage.

p.s – Im not able able to untick the boxes labelled smooth line art and smotthe images … they're ticked but they're greyed out and i cant untick

what version PDF is being exported? acrobat v4 or higher? i think bob is on the right track here, and would recommend that in the very first PDF export dialog box, that the version be turned to acrobat v6. this will not flatten the artwork and leave that up to the RIP to determine how to flatten prior to print. this will remove the lines that are seen.

FWIW these white lines are of no concern to me going to offset printing plates, BUT to digital copiers i'd leave the artwork unflattened and let the digital copier RIP (a fiery for me) do the flattening.

great, thanks for the info collywolly

So collywolly, when I try and export to Acrobat 6, it will not save directl as a PDF:X-1a:2001, but instead saves as a 'PDF:X-1a:2001 [modified]' … is this routine?

So saving it in v6 will will definitely not flatten the artwork at all compared to v4?

Sabir, there are a couple of things to know. Bob was correct about the white lines. Here's a quick way you can verify that they are NOT a problem: zoom all the way in (1600%) and look at the lines. If they appear to be just as thin at 1600% as they were at 100%, they are screen artifacts created by Acrobat in trying to render the PDF for your monitor, and aren't anything that will show up on press. You mentioned to David that the lines seem to appear and disappear depending on the zoom level. That's another sure sign that they are just being created by Acrobat when it tries to fit the pixels of your display to the slices of the image, and… fails.

To make the white lines go away, follow David's advice, but you will FIRST have to turn OFF “Use 2D Acceleration” before you will be able to uncheck Smooth Line Art and Smooth Images. One of Acrobats lesser known gotchas.

You can also try printing a proof copy on a local inkjet. That will tell you if the lines are “real” or not.

yes, this is normal. it is just saying that there is a modification on top of a preset. it isn't actually changing the existing preset unless the option “save preset” is selected in the bottom left and then saving over the top of the old one… and i don't think its possible to save over the presets in []… but could be wrong.
