Unfair Adobe upgrade policy?

Does anyone know why Adobe will not allow an upgrade path from the Creative Suite to an individual program?

I'm trying to upgrade to InDesign CS5 (only) from Design Premium CS4 but it's now allowed. I can only upgrade to the complete suite at considerably higher cost, particularly as I only need InDesign at CS5.

The support people I have contacted give the impression that they are doing me a favour allowing me to purchase the Suite in the first place!

Anyone know how this policy can be appealed or who to contact.

      Many thanks…Rob.

Who knows what lurks in the hearts of Adobe… Only the shadow knows! ;)

However, I think the idea is that the software package you own is the Suite. You see it as a bunch of individual programs, but Adobe sees it as a single program: The Suite. You don't own InDesign, you own the Suite. You could, perhaps sell your copy of CS4 and use that money to buy a copy of InDesign CS5, but then you wouldn't own the other programs anymore.

I think it's extremely unlikely that you can “appeal” this.

My exploration of the upgrades yields further wrinkles for nonprofit users. You can get a heavily discounted price when you purchase either individual programs or suites, but you can not upgrade except through an upgrade plan which you pay up front for two years at the time of purchase. Your upgrade path is assured if you continue to pay for the upgrade plan. There are no cross grades. Existing licenses have no upgrade path.
