I am creating two multi-page INDD docs. They are identical EXCEPT for the type sizes in each. One is for younger people (smaller text) and the other is for older readers (larger text).

Is there a way to revise the text of both at the same time? Edit the text of one and I’m automatically editing the text of the other?

Easiest way to do it would be to use a Word doc and set up Preferences to link to it. (See “Create Links when Placing Text” checkbox in File Handling panel of Preferences dialog box) This will only work if you only make edits in Word, set up your para styles very carefully, and not edit or format in InDesign after placing.

WordsFlow is an even better (commercial) solution with much for flexibility:

Import Word Documents, Edit in Word and InDesign, and Keep Linked for Updating

Another option is to use the Edit > Place and Link feature. This isn’t a well-understood feature, but it can be quite powerful, and even works across two documents, like what you’re describing. Alan G wrote about it here:

Maybe it was a better solution if you did it before you placed it into ID? That way you would do it only once.

If you use Wordsflow, you can set it up after the fact … that is, make each doc linked to the same Word file even after you have 2 separate INDD files.

Thank you to everyone for their feedback. Everything is sounding very complicated, and it might be beyond my skills [probably age related]. I’ve rejiggered the file and manually entered the page titles for each section. I know, I know. I should take advantage of the Indesign tools.
