I have a very frustrating problem using InDesign CS6 that I or no one has been able to resolve. As a retired 72 year old graphic designer, I am still doing pro bono work for my community using CS6 apps. I migrated my apps and 30 years of design files to a new 27” iMac a few years ago. I’m using Mac OS 10.14.6 to continue to use CS6 apps, as I will not and cannot afford to pay a monthly subscription fee forever if I upgrade my OS. I bought and started to learn Affinity Publisher as an alternate design layout app, although InDesign is still better.

What happens is the text in text boxes suddenly disappears and the box goes blank. Then I have to slightly move the text box and the text comes back in view. Sometimes a paragraph will disappear and I have to do the same thing to get the fonts back.

The second problem is the the drop down font palette from the menu bar will go blank, and I cannot see any of the listed fonts. I will scroll my arrow down the palette and hope I hit the right font. If not, I scroll again higher or lower to get the font I need. This is super frustrating and adds a lot of extra time to design a text heavy brochure or leaflet. After a while, all the fonts will reappear. Sometimes I will have to quit and re-open InDesign and the fonts come back… for a while.

If you have a solution, I will be forever grateful. Much thanks!

Some people have reported that rebuilding preferences fixes the empty font menu.

The disappearing text is a very common problem on Macs, along with various other visual glitches. I don’t know any sure-fire fix, but you could try turning off GPU Performance in Preferences. That eliminated most (but not all) of the screen problems for me.

      Hope that helps.

Good ideas, Mike! Volker, check out this post for how to rebuild prefs:

That said, InDesign has a lot of “screen display” bugs, and it is true that sometimes quitting and relaunching the program seems to be the best thing for clearing stuff up.
