I have a single word on one line and two words on the next line and they are
      s p r e a d a c r o s s s t h e l i n e
and I can’t seem to fix it.

This is frustrating because I have encountered this problem before, but so infrequently I can’t remember the cause (or solution).

The microsoft doc.x text was emailed to me. I convert it to Microsoft word.doc (no “x”) and import it into InDesign. What should I be searching for?

Rich, I’ve seen this before too but don’t recall what the fix was. Did you check that it isn’t fully justified with no final para break?

Did you try selecting all the text in the lines/paragraphs and changing the horizontal alignment to align left?

I changed the alignment to left … four words appear on lines of their own. near the middle of the paragraph.

      I don’t think I can post a pic.

      Adobe paragraph composer … GOOD.

Abode single line composer … BAD.

At least in this case. I’ve found this to be a problem in the past. I’ll make certain every style in my arsenal does NOT use single line composer in the future.

I think there is a forced line break or non breaking space.
Try to do this by GREP tab in Find/Change window:

To replace forced line with normal space:
      in Find:
      in Change:

      To delete non breaking space:
      in Find: ~S
in Change: leave empty (Do not put anything)

      and tell us what happened
