      1. I’m typesetting a book with multiple styles. The editor used styles in Word and I mapped them on import into ID. On the file, every time there is a word in italics (which is somewhat frequent) the rest of the paragraph/multiple paragraphs comes out in italics as well. There is no way of knowing where the italics are supposed to end without looking back at the Word file. (The italics were made in Word as local formatting, not as a style.)
This happens whether or not I map styles.
In my normal work flow, I search for italics, apply an italic char style and then apply paragraph styles. I can’t do this here because the italics are totally arbitrary.
What has gone wrong and more importantly, how can I fix it?
      2. In addition, the footnote style is not applying. Is there an easy way to fix this without applying the style to each of the footnotes individually?
      3. Can someone help me out with a GREP search to find all the numbers that are supposed to be footnote references in the text without finding any other numbers? These are also not importing properly!
      Thanks!

This sounds like something just might be messed up with the Word doc, or the import.
      1. That is very odd. My suggestion is to do a Save As from the Word doc… maybe choose .docx instead of .doc (or vice versa)
      2. It’s possible that the paragraph style is applying, but that you have local formatting, or a character style overriding it. Check for that.

      Thanks for the quick reply.
I tried what you suggested and it didn’t work.
Then I tried placing the text into a new blank doc and everything came in OK as far as the Italics are concerned.
So maybe there is something wrong with the doc I set up.
I’m loath to set it up again from the beginning.
      Any further ideas?
There are no par/char selected when I do the import.
