Is there a way to tell which specific things are causing overrides? I know I can use the Style Override Highlighter to see *where* the overrides are, but is there a way to see what is causing the overrides?

      Hi Joel,
if you hover your cursor over the name of the style in the Paragraph Styles panel, you can see a yellow pop-up that shows you the differences from the style.

      Try it

        That’s exactly it! Thank you…

Now a follow-up question: if I am placing a Word doc in InDesign, and the styles in both programs have the exact same name, why would any overrides appear, if the InDesign style “wins?”

because word insists on dragging with it many attributes that are useless in Indesign, even if you select
      “use Indesign over incoming”.

I find the only way to weed them all out is to use the “clear overrides” option at the bottom of the paragraph style menu.

Be sure italics, superscripts, bold etc. are properly styled with character styles before doing this though, or you will lose those attributes. It is a bit of a “hammer” on the text, but does the trick.
