I’m experiencing a strange text effect when I insert a psd/png file in combination with a colored background. The text WITH the background is much sharper and bolder than WITHOUT background.

When I remove the psd/png, the text is rendered fine. Also when I keep the psd/png and remove the background color, the text is fine.

What makes the combination of a colored background and a psd/png the text rendered bad?

Does it make a difference if you put the text frame on a new layer above the layer with the background?

No, not really. I put text on top of everything, rendering stays the same.

It may just have to do with the anti-aliasing algorithms that get used. This article talks about the various text anti-aliasing options in Photoshop, and was written 20 years ago, but it’s still pretty relevant:

This issue is about Indesign. Could not find relevant information about the issue in this text. Or am I missing something?

Oh, maybe I misunderstood… is the text inside the image? Or is it InDesign vector text that you’re putting an image under?

      Example</img>

Here I have a screenshot of what I mean. As you can see, text without background is normal. With background is bolder and sharper. But only when there is a png/psd on the page.

Hope you know what this issue is, because I really want to add an image to this page.

Very strange! Is the image above the text frame? Or below it? (In the layers panel… or in object > arrange )
Do you have View > Display Performance > High Quality Display enabled?

In this example the text layer is on top of everything. It doesn’t make a difference when I rearrange items. Only when I remove the image the text is normal again. Or when I move the background, the text without the background is normal.

If you export as a PDF, does it look correct?
To me it seems like a screen display problem. Did you try “High Quality Display”?

Yes, in the screenshot ‘High Quality Display’ is on and in the pdf the results are the same.

This sounds like it’s a transparency flattener issue. First, make sure you’re saving as a version 7 or higher PDF. Also, make sure the PSD/PNG image is set as the same color space as the color background. When you mix RGB and CMYK, the rendering engine has to rasterize the text that overlaps with the image and background – which is difficult enough, but even more difficult when the color spaces don’t match.

Ok. I understand what you are saying. But I don’t know how to check and set the same color spaces on both. When I check color settings (Edit > …), in Indesign and Photoshop these settings are the same.

Or do I have to set something in the output section when exporting a pdf?

I have used a png/psd file before in a Indesign document and never had this issue.

I think I will just remove the image to make this work. I don’t know how to solve this and it has cost me too much time. Thanks for helping me, although we didn’t find a solution.

      Anyone have an idea?
