Stacking/layer Order Not Working

I am a fairly long-term user of InDesign and while I still have a lot to learn, I am pretty competent with basic things like stacking order and layer hierarchy. However, I have a file that seems to have created its own rules for stacking order. A real puzzle to me is that I have placed an slide-shaped object on a master page, but some, but not all, objects placed on a page using that master page are appearing BELOW the slide on the master page. Also I have explanatory text located below the slide, but if I move objects from the slide to below the slide some of these objects are appearing BELOW text, even though the object layer is well above the text layer.

I have checked my styles, wrap around options, layers, master page layout, but have been unable to rectify the problem. Could anyone suggest some possible setting that could be causing this weird phenomenon?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks!

      Melinda H.

Seems like a real puzzle. I can only think of 2 things. Either the file is corrupted, in which case you should save the file as an IDML and then open it back to see if it got fixed. Or maybe it has to do with the blending mode of certain objects which makes it appear below an object when it is actually in front.

I just want to confirm that you’re talking about the stacking order in InDesign, not when you export to something like PDF, right? if any object is an interactive object (such as a Button) it will move above other objects in the PDF.

Thanks for the response. Yes, I am talking about a file within InDesign which has NOT been exported.

After playing around, creating different objects and encountering the same problem, I have finally been able to recreate not exactly, but more or less, the object which I want and avoid the stacking order problem. However, the book file which I am working with has about 15 text files and this is the third time that this problem has arisen in different files with different objects. This “object appearing below master page objects” problem has been a real puzzle and I was just hoping someone might have a hint as to what is causing it.

So I guess what I am trying to say is that I have created a workaround, but if anyone has any insights on the problem, I am all ears!!!
