I need a shortcut for the function “No break”, but I can’t find it.

You need to go to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts… to even find the assignment, but on the Mac it appears to be Opt+Cmd+X.

Thanks for the input, but it doesn’t work on windows, and I can’t find it under keyboard shortcuts either.
Maybe it isn’t suppose to have a shortcut.

      In Windows it’s Ctrl+Alt+X.

To find it, go to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts…, change Product Area to Type Menu, then scroll to Insert White Space: Nonbreaking Space. The fixed width version is directly below it.

      Non-breaking space or “No break”?

No break can be applied with a character style.

There is no default shortcut for No Break. But, as Bob said, it’s easy to add one. (I second Tim’s obsvn. that Peter was not looking for the character “Non-Breaking Space.)

Go to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts > Panel Menu’s. Scroll down the list for “Character: No Break”. Set it to whatever you want — I use “Ctrl+Alt+B” (I think it originally did something else that wasn’t as useful). You don’t need to memorize or write down the combo; as soon as InDesign allows you to use it, you will also see the combo appear in the Character Panel menu next to the No Break item, just like any other shortcut.

In general, to locate a command quickly, it’s easier to just click the “Show Set” button. This loads the complete set of shortcuttable items into your default text editor, and then you can use its Find Text option to locate what you need.

      Hmmm, right church, wrong pew.

I like to use ctrl+shift+Q as I usually need to apply several no breaks in a row. This way I can highlight the text with my right hand and easily hit my shortcut with my left. It’s a real time-saver.

“right church, wrong pew” … never heard that before. I like it! :-)

To remain on topic, remember you can also just use Control-Enter to call up Quick Apply, then type “no b” and that should select the command. Hit Enter again to apply.

Of course if you use No Break constantly, then I think a keyboard shortcut would be faster.
