    I have a specific set of folders with image files that are linked in my IDCS4 file that I would like to retain when I 'Package' the file for output. Is there a way to retain my folder structure this automatically?

    Don't think so, it just copies all the links to a Links Folder and relinks al the images accordingly for the new document that it creates.

    There is Badia Export Tools https://exportools.badiasoftware.com/

    Not sure if it will allow what you're asking for and it's Mac only – I've never used it personally as I don't work on a Mac.

    No, Package just puts it all in one folder. There should be no need to keep the folder structure if you're packaging for output, but I have been pushing Adobe for years for a “package for archive” feature… if you're packaging to give to another person or for archival, then yes, of course, you may want to keep some file structure.

    The problem, of course, is if you have files in folders all over a hard drive, how does InDeisgn know what “structure” you want?

    Well I'd love to be able to package all PDFs to a folder, or all eps, or all tifs or something. I've needed that before. But it's just a matter of separting the file types after packaging then relinking them in InDesign.

    I've also always wanted to be able to package a book to different folders. I'd like the book to be packed with

    Chapter 1
    Links

    Chapter2
    Links

    Chapter 3
    Links

    etc.

    That would be great because then updating an image that's in Chapter 2 and 5, but only wanting to edit the Chapter 2 image or something, is somewhat of a hassle at the moment.

    You might even want to send Chapter 1,2,4,5, 10 and 17 to someone else to work on. But you have to do all that separately by opening each file and the File>Package.

    Would be neat to just select those chapters and choose Package to Individual folders and then each chapter name gets it's own folder.

    Currently you can package selected documents for print, but all the indesign files go into one folder and all the links go into a single links folder.

    That's always irked me, right back as far when I started with InDesign in CS2.

    thanks David and Eugene.

    my need is more of the 'package for archive' variety… and david, you have a good point about the challenge in how to tell ID what 'structure' I want. much more than than absolute vs. relative, but that would be a start (I do recognize that could potentially create a buried file structure nightmare… but there could be some benefits/uses)

    Eugene: some great suggestions here for improvements, for sure. if i discover some workaround, I'll post back up here.

    A custom package for archive would be extremely useful.

    Most output for print is pdf based these days but after that “Packaging for Archive” is a big part of what we do for various publishers, and they all have their own specs for this, perhaps looking at various often used archive systems and making options for those would be a good starting point.
