problem with hanging indent in numbered list

I'm trying to set up a style for numbered headings. The hanging indent has to be deep enough to accommodate both “1” and “99”. The numbering style has the number followed by a period and a tab. I'm assuming (wrongly??) that there should be a tab stop at the same place as the hanging indent. (For example, if left indent is 0.75 and first line indent is -0.75, then there should be a tab stop at 0.75.) But if I put a tab stop there, the whole heading somehow gets pushed off the page and I see blank text frames to the end of the document. As long as I put the tab stop slightly to the left of where it should be, everything works (except for not being aligned right).

What am I missing? The text frame is 5 inches wide and the type is 36 points, so there's not a lot of room, but it seems like there “should” be enough room to accommodate this. Thanks for any clues!

      Amanda,

Are you using the Align to Decimal tab stop?

apologies for the delayed response. no, I used a left-aligned tab.

I lucked out this time — while I was trying to figure it out, the client was deciding they didn't want numbered headings — but I'd still love to know for the future.

      thanks,

      Amanda

      Dear Amanda,

Can you check your style that, Hyphenate is switched on?

      thanks,

Good point. I think turning hyphenation on might have helped. Smaller type size or shorter word definitely helped. Unfortunately, these weren't an option in that case. So I understand better for next time … is it just unable to fit the word, and thus pushing it to the next screen and the next screen ad infinitum? (This is getting pretty hypothetical, so I'll understand if there are no further answers. Thanks, guys.)

      Amanda,

This response was delayed by a recent vacation, and I'm not entirely sure that the linked Flash video would have put you on the right track, but maybe you'll find some value. Note that when using Align to Decimal (or other characters), the tab precedes the character: https://www.screencast.com/t/J7QbfomFPg6F

      Amanda,

I realized this morning that I should have put a left align tab after the number to position the text. Doing so will allow the number and the text to be moved independently.

I guess my brain was still on vacation….
