I know this is probably futile. I’ve been working with (around) InDesign Books for years and suspect this is one of its shortcomings/bugs.

I have a multi-doc Book set up, but the substrate has just changed and I want to update the color of “Paper” (the Paper swatch) across all docs in the Book.

This seems like one of those things one just can’t do easily, but there are a lot of geniuses here so I thought it would be worth it to throw it out there.

      Thanks! —Paul

Hey Paul! Hm. Did the substrate change so dramatically that you really need to change Paper color?
Did you try synchronizing the color swatches across the book panel? I don’t know if it would sync the Paper color, but might be worth a change.

Note that the paper color won’t really give you a more accurate overall proof. For that, you’d need to change the Soft Proofing profile. I talk about that here:

How to Change the Color of the Background Paper

        Hey David! ?

Yeeeeah… it’s a significant change—from Kraft to bright white. Previously used an opaque spot white for some elements so lots changes. Currently going through and manually adjusting the Paper spec for each individual file, but this kind of project tends to come around again and again. It would be awesome to find some means of making global change to this swatch. This particular swatch doesn’t sync in the book.

And, okay, I need to add this other article here, not because it’s relevant to you, Paul, but because it’s such a cool tip and I had no memory of us publishing it! Fascinating idea:

Using Paper Color to Help Distinguish Various Files

Seems like it would be relatively easy to write a script that sets the value for Paper to a particular color. (I don’t know how to do it, but seems like someone could.) And then you could use that in conjunction with the Batch process script (link below) to run it on a folder of INDD files.

Scripting sounds like a great solution. I should always remember to look for those when I run up against stuff like this. Thank you!

And I LOVE Batch Converter. It’s a key workflow tool for me.

        Many thanks, sir!
