Is there a way to assign an asterisk (or any glyph) as the Numbering Style Format to a numbered list?

I’m trying to replicate what can be done with footnotes, but my text is not a footnote. I tried making it work using the footnote feature, but it forces the footnote text frame at the bottom of the page, which I don’t want.

If you want to be able to place the footnotes wherever you want you could use endnotes instead.

The list text will be a data point populated by a data merge. There will be 45 versions of the document post merge. I tried adding a data point to an endnote and it crashed InDesign.

      Best,
