when you select text in indesign:

why is the selection highlight so much higher than the text?

context: i got sidelined in a business for almost ten years where i was stuck designing in ms word…

      yes, lots of pain, right?

but in ms word that selection highlight can be adjusted & tightened via the exact line spacing…

not being able to do something similar in indesign so far leaves me forced to keep text boxes higher than they seem they need to be to accommodate that space…

or that’s how it SEEMS anyhow…

      help?

If you’re concerned primarily with the first line in the frame, you can adjust that… see:

No way to upload images directly, but you can upload to a file sharing site like imgur.com and then just copy and paste the imgur URL into here.

can tighten that highlighted spacing so i can, in turn, tighten the text box?

note: this is set to bottom just. alignment…

You should be able to make the frame smaller. You don’t have to keep the “selection highlight” inside the frame (it is okay if it sticks out the top).

But if the text pushes out it might be the First Baseline Offset I mentioned above. Or it could be something else. (But the first baseline offset is the most likely culprit.)

does the top of that highlight (or bottom) indicate an actual hard variable?

Sorry, I don’t know what you’re asking. Can you share what the problem is that you’re encountering? What are you having trouble with? What happens when you move the top of the frame down?

no definite problem… i just want to understand the mechanics…
looking at the top of that highlight, is its position changable? is there a setting that makes the highlighted area tighter? is it tied to any setting?

Are those small caps or CAPS? I believe the highlighting is determined by the ascender and descender of the font. Though, some fonts do go crazy when it comes to that.

It works the same way as Quark did.

I guess I don’t understand the issue, as this seems to be the norm. And Microsoft Word is a word processing program and not a page layout program.

small caps but i changed it & the ascenders & descenders are still nowhere near the borders of that highlight…

also changing line spacing/leading/space before have no effect…

i understand that the logic of indesign is different than a word processing programs, i just want to know what the logic is…

if i could tighten that space, theoretically i could be all ocd & tighten the size of the bounding text box as well…

I believe InDesign is highlighting the edges of the font based on how the font designer specced them. That is, the top, left, right, and bottom edge of each character. You’ll find this can be very different in each font.

However, in general, you can (should) ignore the highlight. It’s the text itself that matters. :-)

      ah, frustrating but insightful… ‘thanks…
