making a trifold — spreads or columns?

      Say you want to make a trifold brochure that, flattened out, would be a US-letter-size piece of paper. I've seen recommendations to set it up as either (1) two letter-size pages with three columns each or (2) six smaller pages, organized into two three-page spreads. Somewhere in my dim and cobwebbed memory, however, lurks a statement that, when sending files to a commercial printer, you should not use spreads. Can anyone clear up my confusion? Or otherwise speak to the relative merits of methods #1 and #2? (I assume version #2 would be something to avoid if working with a client using CS4 or earlier?)

      Yes, using Spreads is okay in this situation. In fact, it's even better because you get fold lines automatically. More here:
