I think my question is pretty straightforward.

I currently have the roman (uk english) version of Indesign CS4 installed, and would like to install the Japanese version too. So I downloaded the trial version. But when I start the setup, it tells me that 'indesign is already installed in this system'.

And that's the end of the story.

Question: How can I install this second language version of Indesign on my system? Do I have to fool the installation by moving a folder? Creating a new user didn't help (mac user).

      Thanks a lot !

Unless something has changed, you can't have the Japanese and English versions (or any other combination of versions) installed.

Bob, I had both the American and Japanese versions of InDesign CS3 running on my laptop with no problem. I think you can have the English and ME versions running together, too. Where did you see that you're not able to do this? Perhaps new in CS4?

I just tried it on a different Mac, but no luck.

My mac already has several versions of Indesign, so I would have made sense why it didn't work. But the other mac (which only has CS4) had the same problem.

The installation message is in dutch, but it said

“can't continue with the installation, because indesign is already installed on this system. If you want to reinstall indesign, please use the installation setup used for your current Indesign”.

I just find it a bit weird that Adobe presumes that no one, except native japanese speakers, will be doing layout in Japanese.

So you make your choice: english or japanese. There should at least be support for the japanese (or CJK) layout system. As a plugin, or update or whatever. This way, you have a choice. I mean Illustrator supports it, but not Indesign.

Yes! We've been pushing for this for years. Look at this post from 2006.

Well then, I stand corrected but man, I could have sworn you couldn't do this.

      Just found this: https://kb2.adobe.com/cps/331/331644.html

This done seem to be OS specific.

It also says that it can't be done when indesign is installed, part of the creative suite. Only as a stand alone application.

Basicly this means: buy more software, get less support.

I tried the template from Diane, and that works great! I just hope I won't run into unexpected trouble in PDF (you never know). We have a possible catalogue layout job coming up, which is in Japanese. I know there are Japanese specific options in the J-version of Indesign, so it seems I can't get a hold of them.

David and Bob, thanks for the support ;)

@Bob: Thanks for the link to the Adobe TechDoc. I was not aware of being able to make separate user on Mac (albeit with some caveats) and have not tried it. I simply have a separate boot volume for each language version, usually an external drive. This began with CS3, and it is a pain. Not sure if it's due to technical reasons, business reasons, or oversight (the latter being how it was presented to me as having happened in the first place with CS3…)

@pixel-bot: Glad to hear our template is working out. It really is the best way to do CJK typesetting in the English version, for now. Just please make sure there is a native speaker checking things in the workflow at some point!

@dburns: All the first tests seemed to work out just fine with the template. Have you ever encountered any problems in print or PDF? (just doublechecking).

So it IS possible with a different boot volume … hmm … maybe I should check that out.

Double checking the contents of the catalog shouldn't be a problem, I know a few native speakers and have about six years of experience with Japanese myself. ????????;-)
