      Hi

      Indexmatic looks like a great tool to aid indexing text, but is there a way to index images? For example, I have several pages of advertisements and would like the index to display like so:

      Accountants: Jo Bloggs Accountants 4

      Accountants: Money Matters Accountancy 7

      Building Work: We Fix It Builders 5

      Computer Repairs: iRepairs.com 10

      that sort of thing.

      Is there a way to tag images, or add an object style (as you would a character style in indexmatic) in order to create an index?

      Thanks.

      Of course object styles approach wouldn't work, as I want to create an index based on tags – duh!! ;)

      Indexmatic works only on actual text. Although technically, it's possible to have it also look at every image's XML Metadata, or notes inside a private label, or a number of other ways … it may be easier to just enter your text into a frame of its own on top of (or nearby) the images, and make this text invisible by setting its color to [None].

      Thanks for the advice Jongware. Could you explain what you mean by the image's XML Metadata?

      Photoshop allows to add 'metadata' to some image formats, and with CS5, for example, you can automatically retrieve that and use as 'caption'. It's possible to have a javascript such as Indexmatic check images for any metadata, and to have it include in its list of keywords-to-index.

      All purely theoretically, as it needs Marc to rewrite Indexmatic. As I said, it's way easier just put 'invisible' text nearby your images.

      Here's a bit more on the “making index of images” trick:

      Hi.

      Having read and thought about both of your suggestions, here is the workaround I've developed that seems to work:

      – In each image, through Bridge or when creating them in Photoshop, I insert the description in File Info;

      – I create a paragraph style in Indesign, 'Advert';

      – I place the images into my document and then follow these instructions using this script: https://creativepro.com/modified-script-adds-captions-from-clipboard-to-images; I select XMP Description from the label type, and then Advert from the label style. If you have multiple images to apply captions to, leave them all unselected and the following notice displays 'Add captions to all images in the document?'. Click OK and job done;

      – Once the captions (tags) are in place (automatically created on their own new layer called 'labels') I uncheck the Print Layer box under the Layer Options for 'layers';

      – I then create a TOC using David's suggestion above, making the list alphabetical.

      This seems to work well, though I can't group an image with it's caption as the image won't then print (I imagine the no print option for labels is applied to the image). I suppose a work around for this is to have the label text have no colour instead of the label layer Print Layer option being unchecked, but the downside is that you don't get to see the label then.

      Anyway, I hope this helps and if anyone has any other suggestions I'm all ears.

      Cheers.

      When you group items, they automatically all move to the same layer – the topmost one. You could still achieve the result you want by chaging the text color of your “advert” paragraph style to None.
